Special Feature: How Marketing Agencies Harm Film Industry – Box Office Pumping By South To Cliche Marketing In Bollywood

Marketing agencies can indeed influence the film industry in various ways, sometimes to its detriment. Let’s see how!

Marketing agencies wield significant influence in the film industry, shaping audience perceptions and driving box office success. However, their practices can sometimes inadvertently harm the industry’s integrity and creative vitality.

From box office pumping to prioritising clichéd content and neglecting diversity in campaigns, marketing strategies may undermine long-term sustainability.

Here are a few practices by marketing agencies that harm the film industry:

Box Office Pumping: Some marketing agencies might engage in practices known as box office pumping, artificially inflating ticket sales numbers through tactics like buying tickets in bulk or organising fake screenings. This can create a misleading impression of a film’s success, leading to inflated expectations for future projects and potentially damaging the industry’s credibility.

Take the example of Prabhas’ Salaar Part 1. Not long after Salaar hit theatres, online users began speculating about possible shady tactics employed by the makers to inflate box office numbers.

Allegations surfaced of ‘housefull’ shows in supposedly closed theatres, sparking hashtags like ‘Scammer Salaar’ atop trending lists. Accusations of manipulating corporate and proxy bookings to artificially boost box office performance swirled among users. The recently premiered BMCM faced similar scrutiny.

Overemphasis On Clichés: In Bollywood and other film industries, marketing agencies may prioritise clichéd and formulaic content in their campaigns, as these are often perceived as safer bets for attracting audiences.

For example, Many Bollywood marketing campaigns tend to focus heavily on promoting films that adhere to established formulas and clichés, such as romantic dramas featuring glamorous stars or action-packed blockbusters with predictable plotlines. This can lead to a homogenisation of content, stifling creativity and innovation in storytelling.

Neglecting Quality For Hype: Marketing campaigns focused solely on generating buzz and hype around a film may prioritise spectacle over substance. We have seen cases where films with weak scripts or subpar production quality receive disproportionately large marketing budgets, relying heavily on flashy promotional tactics to attract audiences.

This results in films failing to live up to the hype generated by their marketing campaigns, leading to disappointment among viewers and tarnishing the industry’s reputation.

Misleading Advertising: Marketing agencies might engage in misleading advertising practices, such as misrepresenting the content of a film or using deceptive editing techniques in trailers to attract audiences.

Some films have been criticised for misleading advertising, such as editing trailers in a way that misrepresents the tone or content of the film to appeal to a broader audience.

Viewers who are drawn in by the promises of an exciting or humorous trailer ultimately feel deceived when the actual film fails to deliver on those expectations.

Ignoring Diversity & Representation: Despite growing calls for more diverse and inclusive storytelling in the film industry, marketing agencies launch campaigns for many mainstream films only to prioritise narratives and characters that cater to traditional gender and cultural stereotypes.

This perpetuates a lack of representation for marginalised communities and limits the industry’s ability to reflect the diversity of its audience.
We agree that marketing plays a crucial role in promoting films and engaging audiences. However, agencies need to approach their work ethically and responsibly to ensure the long-term health and integrity of the film industry.
