S S Rajamouli’s next feature Varanasi continues to add high-profile names as the makers push ahead with the shoot of the globe-spanning action adventure led by Mahesh Babu. The film, which also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, a date Rajamouli announced on social media.
The latest casting update centers on veteran actor Prakash Raj, who has joined the project in a key role. The film is being mounted as a major pan-international production, with M M Keeravani composing the music.
Prakash Raj’s Role In Varanasi Is Now Confirmed
Prakash Raj has confirmed that he is part of Varanasi and revealed the nature of his character. During a media interaction, the actor said, “I am working in Rajamouli’s Varanasi. I play Maha Shiva Bhakt in the film.”
Alongside that confirmation, the current on-ground update from the production is that Prakash Raj is playing Mahesh Babu’s father, a character positioned as an ardent devotee whose actions set key events of the story in motion. The role is also understood to be pivotal to the narrative turn that propels Mahesh Babu’s character into the film’s central journey.
The film is already well into production. Updates around the project indicate that roughly half the shoot has been completed, and Prakash Raj has finished filming for important schedules.

Varanasi is directed by S S Rajamouli and stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead. It is produced by K L Narayana under Sri Durga Arts.
The film is positioned as a large-scale action adventure spanning multiple locations, with the story described as a modern, action-driven narrative that also draws from Indian mythological elements. The release is locked for April 7, 2027.

Prakash Raj was seen in Kalki 2898 AD (2024), the Nag Ashwin-directed sci-fi epic starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Deepika Padukone.
He also featured in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023), headlined by Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi and Trisha.
On the Telugu front, he appeared in Trivikram Srinivas’ Guntur Kaaram (2024), led by Mahesh Babu. Among his confirmed upcoming theatrical projects is Varanasi (2027), marking his first collaboration with director S S Rajamouli.
