Shanaya Kapoor’s next major project takes the Student Of The Year franchise into an entirely new space. Student Of The Year 3 is a web series backed by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, and the new chapter moves away from the glossy campus energy of the earlier films to embrace a darker, edgier youth drama.
Student Of The Year 3 Takes A Sharper Turn
The biggest shift comes in the format. Unlike Student Of The Year in 2012 and Student Of The Year 2 in 2019, the third installment has been mounted as a streaming series. Reema Maya directs the project, while Shanaya Kapoor leads the cast. Shanaya also features in a double role, giving the franchise a striking new hook as it returns with a more intense emotional core.
The series pushes the familiar elite school setting into a far moodier zone. Its world is built around privilege, pressure, fractured friendships and complicated relationships, with a more provocative and emotionally charged treatment than the first two films. That tonal pivot gives the franchise a fresh identity while keeping its youth-centric appeal firmly intact.
A Franchise Reinvented For Streaming
The earlier Student Of The Year films were glossy entertainers that introduced a new generation of young stars. Karan Johar directed the 2012 original, which launched Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. Student Of The Year 2, directed by Punit Malhotra, starred Tiger Shroff and introduced Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria, with Alia Bhatt making a song appearance.
With the third chapter, the franchise moves to JioHotstar and expands into a longer storytelling format that allows more room for character conflict and relationship drama. The title Student Of The Year 3: After The Dark has circulated around the project, though Student Of The Year 3 remains the identified title for now.
Shanaya Kapoor’s Recent And Upcoming Work
For Shanaya Kapoor, the series adds another prominent title to a career phase that is now taking shape on screen. She made her acting debut with Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan in 2025, a romantic drama co-starring Vikrant Massey and directed by Santosh Singh. In 2026, she appeared in Tu Yaa Main alongside Adarsh Gourav, with Bejoy Nambiar directing the survival thriller. Both her films flopped at box office.
Student Of The Year 3 stands as one of the most visible projects in her current lineup because it places her at the centre of a high-recognition franchise with a dramatically reworked format and tone. Another long-discussed Dharma title, Bedhadak, has remained part of the conversation around her slate, but Student Of The Year 3 now holds clear momentum as a major showcase for her screen presence.
