Just as Mirzapur The Movie opened in theatres on September 4, 2026, the franchise’s jump to the big screen ran into a serious backlash. Rajasthani artist Rapperiya Baalam has accused the makers of using his song Shoorveer without permission or credit, sparking a dispute that now stretches beyond copyright into questions of cultural respect and on-screen context.
The singer, composer and rapper made his objection public after viewers alerted him to the track’s appearance in a gangster sequence. He did not ease into the matter. Rapperiya Baalam said, “Today, my heart is broken. Some of you may ask why my heart is broken. You might say I should be happy because my song is in Mirzapur. But the Mirzapur team did not take my permission to use my song. Who gave them the permission? I certainly did not.”
Rapperiya Baalam Calls Out The Song’s Use
At the heart of his protest is the meaning he attaches to the song itself. He said, “This song is dedicated to Maharana Pratap ji. We are using this song to glorify the villains in the movie. Is this right?”
He also made it clear that the issue, for him, is not opposition to the film using his work, but the way it was allegedly done. “If the Mirzapur team had approached me and said, ‘Rapperiya bhai, we want to use your song,’ we would have given them 10 ideas. But taking the song without permission is not right,” he said.
Copyright Questions And Stronger Warning
Rapperiya Baalam then turned directly to the legal and licensing side of the dispute. “I don’t know who gave you these rights or from whom you obtained them. Whoever gave you the rights, I would like you to ask them: Do you have any copyright?”
From there, his criticism widened into a larger cultural objection. He said, “Why wouldn’t it hurt? This is an insult to Rajasthan. It is an insult to Maharana Pratap ji, and we will not be able to tolerate this.”
The public reaction, however, has also underscored just how quickly viewers recognised the song in the film. “Being the composer and singer of the song, and seeing millions of people listening to it, of course, your enthusiasm brings a lot of messages. Thousands of messages have come to me in DMs saying, ‘Brother, your song is in Mirzapur.’ But, Mirzapur team, you should have done this properly. You should have spoken to me,” he said.
He closed with a firm signal that he intends to pursue the matter further. “Anyway, whatever action needs to be taken will continue.”
Mirzapur The Movie Cast And Film Details
Directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, Mirzapur The Movie is produced by Excel Entertainment in association with Amazon MGM Studios. The film stars Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, Divyendu Sharma, Rasika Dugal, Abhishek Banerjee, Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar. It expands the crime saga from streaming to the big screen, carrying forward the franchise’s familiar world of violence, revenge and shifting loyalties.
The makers have not yet issued a public response to Rapperiya Baalam’s allegation, leaving the controversy unresolved for now. With the film newly in theatres and the artist openly challenging how Shoorveer was cleared and used, this dispute now stands as the next key development to watch around Mirzapur The Movie.
