Subhash Ghai Reveals Why He QUIT Films, Feels Ranbir Kapoor Is Only Actor To Become ‘Superstar’ After Khans

Subhash Ghai revealed that he quit filmmaking because he no longer saw a true love for cinema in the industry.

Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai (known for classics like Pardes and Khalnayak) has shared why he stepped away from filmmaking. The director, who was a major force in the industry during the ’80s and ’90s, spoke about how Bollywood has changed and why he believes the industry has failed to produce true superstars in recent years.

Subhash Ghai On Why He Quit Filmmaking

In a recent media interview, Ghai admitted that his passion for cinema started fading when he realised that people were no longer as dedicated to filmmaking as before. While speaking to Game Changers, he said, “I stopped making films because I don’t see the love for cinema anymore – not in people, not even in my own team. They are all just working.”

He recalled an incident with a writer he had approached for a script. According to Ghai, the writer assured him that the first draft would be ready in three days and the complete story in 15 days.

However, before even starting, the writer demanded full payment upfront. This left Ghai frustrated with how work culture had changed in the industry.

Filmmaker Disappointed With Digital Communication

Ghai also expressed his frustration with how technology has altered the filmmaking process. He criticised how WhatsApp and email have replaced in-person discussions.

He shared, “They say you send me on email, that is enough. WhatsApp mein toh script aur dialogue likhe hai aaj kal.”

The director believes that today’s actors and filmmakers prioritise financial gain over artistic passion, which has made it difficult for new superstars to emerge.

Subhash Ghai Feels Ranbir Kapoor Is The Only Superstar After Khans

According to Ghai, Bollywood has not been able to produce any true superstars after the reigns of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan. However, he made an exception for Ranbir Kapoor and stated that the Animal actor is the only one who has come close to reaching that level of stardom.

Subhash Ghai’s Influence on Shahid Kapoor’s Career

Ghai has played a key role in launching the careers of several actors, including Shahid Kapoor. Before becoming a Bollywood star, Shahid worked as a backup dancer in Ghai’s film Taal. While he gained recognition through the music video Aankhon Mein, his appearance in Kahin Aag Lage Lag Jaaye alongside Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was a moment that got him noticed years later.

Shahid once shared that he had a bike accident before the shoot and was nervous about sharing the screen with Aishwarya. Interestingly, the two never worked together again after Taal.
