Sunny Deol is set to surprise his fans with a new avatar. While he is gearing up for his high-octane action film Jaat in April, he has also completed shooting for a heartfelt family drama (tentatively titled Safar).
Directed by Shashank Udapurkar, the film takes Deol away from his usual action-packed roles. The makers are planning to release it directly on an OTT platform by late 2025.
Safar To Showcase A New Side Of Sunny Deol
Deol has built a massive fan base with his powerful action sequences and intense dialogues. However, Safar offers a refreshing change.
A source close to the film revealed to mid-day, “After Gadar 2, Sunny was offered multiple action films, but Safar stood out. It’s a story about a middle-aged family man who learns to live life to the fullest by helping others. There’s no action, no larger-than-life hero moments—just pure, heartfelt storytelling. When Vishal [Rana] and Shashank narrated the script, Sunny loved it and immediately said yes.”
The film also stars Simran Bagga and Darshan Jariwala in key roles. Udapurkar is known for Anna (2016) and Prawaas (2020). With this new OTT film, he aims to showcase a softer, more emotional side of Deol’s screen presence.
Reason For Choosing Direct Digital Release
Deol’s recent box office success might suggest a theatrical release, but the makers believe Safar is better suited for digital streaming.
The source explained, “It’s an intimate, emotional film. Theatres thrive on big action spectacles, while OTT allows for more personal storytelling.”
Producer Vishal Rana is in talks with multiple streaming platforms and expects to finalise a deal by June.
Sunny Deol: Work Front
Even as Safar takes him into unexplored territory, Deol is not straying from his action-packed roots. His next film Jaat, promises a full-blown mass entertainer. The trailer is set to drop on March 22 at a grand event in Jaipur.
He also has Border 2 and Ramayana lined up.
