Taapsee Pannu Calls Anubhav Sinha’s Cinema ‘Dramatically Real’ as Assi Builds Momentum

Taapsee Pannu is once again stepping into Anubhav Sinha’s world of sharp social commentary and moral urgency with Assi, a film that is steadily turning into one of the most watched upcoming Hindi titles. After pushing conversations with Mulk and Thappad, the actor director pairing is reuniting for a third time, and early buzz around Assi is being driven by its charged lines, courtroom intensity, and Taapsee’s steely screen presence in the glimpses released so far.

The anticipation is also rooted in how consistently Sinha’s films have leaned into issues that feel immediate, even uncomfortable. That signature seems set to return in Assi, positioned as a fast paced investigative courtroom drama with an ensemble that has already become part of the film’s early momentum.

Taapsee Pannu On Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Dramatically Real’ Storytelling

Reflecting on what sets Sinha apart, Taapsee underlined that his impact goes beyond the genre he is often associated with. She said, “I don’t want to bracket Anubhav Sir only with respect to courtroom dramas. I think there are a lot of things he brings to the table that make his films feel dramatically real almost too close to home. Whether it’s courtroom dramas like Mulk or Assi, or stories like Thappad or Article 15, his storytelling has a way of presenting facts so effortlessly in front of you that sometimes, when that mirror is held up, it’s challenging to look at. He makes you see reality of life in such an effortless manner that you simply cannot ignore them once they’re in front of you and that’s what makes his films extremely impactful.”

She also spoke about the sense of security actors feel under his direction, adding, “When you have a director who has the power to present even the simplest stories in the most powerful way, I think actors are probably the safest in those films. That’s why I don’t think anyone can say that a certain actor didn’t perform well in his films. The material he gives you, the kind of scenes and moments he allows you to create there’s very little room for an actor who is truly invested to go wrong. If you’re genuinely committed, the moments he asks you to create and the dialogues he gives you are like kid in a candy shop.”

Assi Trailer Hook And Cast Details

One line in particular is already being cited as a chilling takeaway from the film’s promotional material: “She did not reach home that night”. With Assi, the promise appears to be a story that forces a confrontation with uncomfortable truths and everyday headlines that often fade into background noise.

Alongside Taapsee Pannu in the lead, Assi stars Kani Kusruti, Revathy, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, with special appearances by Naseeruddin Shah, Supriya Pathak, and Seema Pahwa.

Assi is presented by Gulshan Kumar and T Series and is a Benaras Media Works production. The film is directed by Anubhav Sinha and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, and Anubhav Sinha. It is set to release exclusively in theatres worldwide on 20 February 2026.
