Aanand L Rai has firmly put the brakes on speculation about Tanu Weds Manu 3 being mounted with new leads. The filmmaker has now made it clear that the beloved franchise cannot move forward without its original stars, R Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut, shutting down talk of a version built around an entirely different pairing.
Speaking about the future of the series, Rai said, “’Tanu Weds Manu‘ won’t be possible without Madhavan. So, whenever you will see any ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, whether three or four or five, it will be with Madhavan and Kangana.”
Aanand L Rai Shuts Down Fresh Cast Buzz
The clarification comes after industry chatter suggested that a third Tanu Weds Manu film was being developed as a separate story with a new set of characters. That idea had sparked curiosity because the franchise has long been associated with the crackling dynamic between Manu Sharma and Tanuja Trivedi.
Released in 2011, Tanu Weds Manu followed the unlikely romance between Madhavan’s straight-laced Manu and Ranaut’s wild, impulsive Tanu. The sequel, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, arrived in 2015 and pushed their messy marriage into even more chaotic territory. Both films clicked strongly with audiences and helped cement the series as one of Hindi cinema’s most popular romantic comedies of the last decade.
Rai’s Next Production Is Nakhrewaalii
While conversation around Tanu Weds Manu 3 continues, Rai is currently backing Nakhrewaalii, directed by Rahul Shanklya. The film stars newcomers Ansh Duggal and Pragati Srivastava, and is scheduled to release in November 2026.
Rai also had warm words for his young leads, saying, “For me, they are big stars. The way they were on the sets is fabulous. There’s so much to learn from them. When I was directing my first film, though I was never nervous, I was not as confident as these two actors.”
R Madhavan And Kangana Ranaut’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Rai’s latest comment lands at an especially interesting moment because both Madhavan and Ranaut have continued to shape distinct career paths, making the idea of their on-screen reunion feel even more intriguing. Madhavan earned strong attention with Rocketry: The Nambi Effect in 2022 and returned to mainstream Hindi audiences with Shaitaan in 2024, reinforcing his range across biographical drama and commercial thrillers. Ranaut, meanwhile, has remained in the spotlight with Tejas in 2023 and Emergency in 2025, two projects that kept her positioned at the centre of performance-driven, headline-making films.
That current momentum gives Rai’s statement added weight. More than a nostalgic callback, a new Tanu Weds Manu film with Madhavan and Ranaut would bring back a pairing that has stayed culturally alive even years after the second film’s release. For a franchise built as much on personality clashes as romance, their return remains the key reason audiences are still watching this space so closely.
