Ted Sarandos Applauds Sanjay Leela Bhansali: Heeramandi Took Indian Storytelling Global, Redefined OTT Success

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos hails Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi as a defining moment for Indian storytelling on the global stage, calling it one of his most creatively rewarding collaborations.

When Sanjay Leela Bhansali unveiled his ambitious OTT debut, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, anticipation built to a fever pitch. What happened next was far more than a successful web series; it felt like an international celebration of Indian storytelling.

With sprawling sets, nuanced performances, and Bhansali’s unique flair, Heeramandi did not just stream on Netflix; it crashed into the hearts of millions worldwide.

And now, none other than Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos has hailed the series as a watershed moment for Indian content on the global stage.

Heeramandi’s Viewership Numbers: Record-Breaking International Success

Heeramandi reached 4.5 million viewers in the very first week and amassed 33 million watch hours, easily becoming the most watched Indian web series in the first week of its release. It reached #2 on the Netflix Non-English TV chart and appeared in the Top Ten ranks in 43 countries, showcasing the fact that rich, rooted Indian stories can still capture international attention.

Bhansali transformed Heeramandi into a visual masterwork even in this new small-screen format, with his camera-like, detail-orientated approach and sublime visual splendour.

Ted Sarandos on SLB: “One of the Most Creatively Rewarding Projects”

On the occasion of Bhansali, Sarandos shared about the journey of greenlighting Heeramandi; this included the interesting detail about Bhansali flying to Los Angeles to pitch the project.

“It was almost like a challenge,” Sarandos shared, explaining that SLB presumably assumed Netflix would decline politely. Instead, Netflix said yes — emphatically.

Working with SLB’s team was daunting with production timelines to adhere to and a host of other challenges, but through it all, Sarandos called it:

“One of the most creatively interesting things I have ever done in India.”

He marvelled at Bhansali’s choice of practical massive sets and called Heeramandi:

“A love letter to India’s love of cinema” with its charm from a bygone era, and historical aesthetic detail.

Heeramandi’s Cultural Impact: A New Standard For Indian OTT

More than a visual experience, Heeramandi launched Sanjay Leela Bhansali into the universe of Indian film gods, alongside the likes of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt. It’s a series that was able to bridge history, great music, power, and emotion in a way that allowed audiences from across the globe to consume pre-independence India.

It spawned everything from viral reels of its luxe costumes to meaningful academic discussions on femininity and rebellion, topping the hashtags — it was a source of conversation and cultural openness, above and beyond content.

What’s Next For Bhansali: Love and War — A Mega Movie Production

After slaying the digital game, SLB is heading back to cinemas with Love and War starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal.

Hailed as among the largest cinematic moments of 2026, the film has already stirred up huge excitement with the highly touted cast and Bhansali’s auteur ability.

With Heeramandi, Bhansali has shown that he can elevate any platform — and Love & War may just redefine a Bollywood epic in the post-OTT era.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi is not only a landmark of OTT history but also a cultural artefact that until now has shown the global power of Indian narratives, and that’s the impact that Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos himself acknowledged.

Bhansali has proven himself — not as a filmmaker who follows trends, but as a filmmaker who creates trends. And now, while the world waits for Love & War, one thing feels for sure: wherever Bhansali goes next, the world will follow.
