Thalaivar 173 Update: Rajinikanth and Cibi Chakaravarthi’s Film Heads Toward April Shoot Amid Director Swap Buzz

Just when whispers of a directorial shake-up began circling Thalaivar 173, the Rajinikanth film’s clearest update pointed elsewhere. The project is being readied for an April 2026 shoot in Chennai, with Cibi Chakaravarthi still attached, making the production plan far more concrete than the swap chatter surrounding it.

The noise gathered pace after Ashwath Marimuthu‘s name resurfaced in fan and trade discussions, largely because the filmmaker had earlier confirmed that he had narrated a story to Rajinikanth. But no official announcement has placed him in charge of Thalaivar 173. At this stage, the update that carries weight is the film’s active pre-production under Cibi Chakaravarthi, not a confirmed creative handover.

April Shoot Plan Puts The Focus Back On Production

The Rajinikanth starrer is currently in pre-production, with the team working toward beginning principal photography in Chennai in April 2026. That timeline is the strongest present indicator of where the film stands.

The Ashwath Marimuthu conversation remains relevant only as background to the recent buzz. His earlier comments about meeting Rajinikanth and narrating a story had already sparked curiosity, so his name naturally returned to the conversation when director-change talk surfaced. Even so, there has been no formal communication from the makers announcing any replacement on Thalaivar 173.

The current reading of the film, then, is straightforward. The project is moving toward a shoot, and the names officially linked to it have not been publicly revised.

A Tightly Guarded Rajinikanth Film Under Raaj Kamal Films International

Backed by Raaj Kamal Films International, Thalaivar 173 is being mounted with the kind of discretion usually reserved for a major star vehicle. Cibi Chakaravarthi is attached to direct, while the makers have kept the story, title treatment, and character details under wraps. That silence has been deliberate, with the production revealing very little even as interest around the film continues to build.

Names such as Basil Joseph, Shobana, and Priyanka Arul Mohan have been linked to the cast in ongoing industry discussion, but the banner has yet to roll out a full official ensemble announcement. For now, the film’s most solid identifiers remain its lead star, its director, and its Raaj Kamal Films International backing, which gives the project a distinct weight in Rajinikanth’s lineup.

Rajinikanth’s Recent And Upcoming Work

The reason Thalaivar 173 is drawing such close attention is also tied to the phase Rajinikanth is in right now. After delivering the blockbuster Jailer in 2023, he moved through a varied run that included an extended appearance in Lal Salaam and the theatrical release of Vettaiyan in 2024. By the time Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, arrived in theatres on August 14, 2025, Rajinikanth’s slate had already taken on the shape of a carefully built new chapter, mixing crowd-pulling commercial titles with filmmakers from distinct sensibilities.

That is what gives Thalaivar 173 added importance. It is not landing in isolation, but as part of a stretch in which Rajinikanth has been actively redefining the scale and texture of his later-career choices. Alongside this film, Jailer 2 also remains one of the major titles attached to his future lineup, keeping the superstar firmly positioned at the centre of Tamil cinema’s next big-screen cycle.
