John Abraham has spent more than two decades in Bollywood, but selling his films is still a struggle. He says his movies don’t follow the typical commercial formula with song-and-dance sequences, making them harder to market.
His latest release The Diplomat also faced challenges in getting studio support. Even with his experience, he finds it tough to convince producers to back his projects. The Diplomat marks his fourth film as a co-producer after Vicky Donor, Madras Café, and Parmanu – all considered risky before release.
John Abraham Feels Bollywood Needs To Get Braver Like South
John believes his storytelling approach makes it difficult to sell his films. He said, “My films do not follow a commercial formula. There is no song and dance – I don’t have a heroine dancing. Most of the time my wife dies at the start of the film and I continue from thereon. Maybe no one likes to see my face so much. I have a problem selling these films, but I hope we get braver as a community. Like the South is very brave; they follow their conviction and make those films. We need to get braver.”
As a producer, he fights to secure funds for his projects. He ensures his own costs don’t add pressure on a film’s budget because storytelling comes first for him. However, studios remain hesitant about films like The Diplomat. He admits that if a film underperforms at the box office, he makes no profit.
Actor Wants To Make ‘Meaningful Films’
Despite the struggles, John remains passionate about making meaningful films. His next project Tehran is inspired by real events. The story revolves around an attempt on an Israeli diplomat’s life in 2013, at a time when India and Iran were building a gas pipeline.
He shared, “My character goes to Tehran to find out what’s happening. It’s not just geo-political, but also a beautiful human story. That space is so exciting, and I want youngsters to really see that and understand that India is a cool country.”
For the unversed, The Diplomat is set to hit theatres tomorrow, March 14.
