A promotional event for The Kerala Story 2 in Delhi has snowballed into a full-blown flashpoint online, after a tense, viral back-and-forth between the film’s makers and members of the press over one question that refused to die down: if the film carries Kerala in its title, why were there no Malayali women at the centre of the press conference?
The face-off unfolded as producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah and director Kamakhya Narayan Singh addressed the media while promoting the sequel, with clips from the exchange quickly spreading across social media and drawing sharp reactions from both sides of the debate around the franchise.

At the event, the makers introduced 30 women whom they claimed had experienced forced religious conversions. Journalists, however, challenged the presentation and repeatedly pointed out that none of the women on stage were from Kerala. According to the makers, the women were from Bengal, Bihar, Bhilwara, Gangapur, Rajkot, Udaipur, Jammu, Maharashtra, Bhopal, Jharkhand, Faridabad, Meerut, Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and Indore.
When asked why no Malayali women were present, Shah responded, “We brought those who suffered from Kerala after Kerala Story 1. The video is still available on YouTube.” He added, “Had we brought them again, you would have said we brought the same people. You can’t argue both sides.”
The questioning then shifted to how the sequel is materially different from the first film. Singh said, “No, it’s the same story. This is a pan-India story.” As the discussion grew more combative, Shah also told the media, “Aapko isko masala dena hai, aap dijiye please. (You add spice to it if you want).”
Reporters also challenged the makers on the title itself, asking why the sequel still foregrounds Kerala if the film is now positioned as a broader national story. Singh replied, “No, it’s related to Kerala also. And from Kerala, how it is all over India. The first time we made this story, people said this is only Kerala’s story. We now want to show that this happens across the country, not just Kerala.”

The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond is directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under Sunshine Pictures. The film stars Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha. It is scheduled to release in theatres on February 27, 2026.
Away from the Delhi press event, the film has also been under legal scrutiny in Kerala, with the Kerala High Court raising questions around the film’s certification and asking why the title continues to reference Kerala if the narrative is pitched as pan-India. The film’s teaser was also pulled down amid the ongoing controversy.
