Mohammed Yusuf Khan, well known by his stage name Dilip Kumar, had a career spanning five decades and commanded the silver screen, gaining the moniker “Abhinay Samrat” for his contributions- king of acting.
The actor first experienced success in 1947, the year India gained independence, and steadily increased his fame over the ensuing decades with the help of movies like Andaz, Aan, Daag, Devdas, Azaad, Naya Daur, Madhumati, Paigham, Gunga Jumna, Ram Aur Shyam, Mughal-E-Aza and the epic Mughal-E-Azam. On Saturday, the Film Heritage Foundation announced a film festival to honour the 100th birthday of late movie great Dilip Kumar. According to a press statement from the nonprofit organisation formed by filmmaker and historian Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the event, dubbed “Dilip Kumar Hero Of Heroes,” will take place on December 10 and 11.

“Even though some of these films were released nearly seventy years ago, the power of Dilip Kumar’s performances, his craft as a method actor and his charisma make him ageless,” he added. Dungarpur, who had previously organised a film festival to celebrate Amitabh Bachchan’s 80th birthday, expressed his sadness at the fact that many of Kumar’s excellent movies were only preserved in low-resolution forms that could not be viewed on a large screen.
“I cobbled together these films with great difficulty with many people asking me why some of their favourite Dilip Kumar films were not included… I hope this will be a wake-up call to filmmakers and producers to realise that time is running out and that they should look into preserving their films before it is too late,” he said. Veteran performer Saira Banu expressed her joy at the Film Heritage Foundation’s decision to coincide the festival with Dilip Sahab’s 100th birthday. She said, “They could not have chosen a more apt title to commemorate India’s greatest actor -‘Dilip Kumar Hero Of Heroes’. He was my favourite hero from the time I was 12 years old when I first saw him in ‘Aan’ in technicolor. It will be a joy to watch him back on the big screen, larger than life, like he has been in my life,”
Bachchan urged everyone who enjoyed movies and modern performers to take advantage of the fantastic opportunity to see Kumar’s movies on a big screen. The seasoned actor emphasised that his films would be acting master classes.
