Thug Life Box Office: Kamal Haasan’s Action Saga Is Dead On Arrival With A ₹17 Cr Day 1 Collection

Kamal Haasan’s much-hyped Thug Life opens to a disastrous ₹17 crore Day 1 collection, following the underwhelming trend of Indian 2, with negligible walk-ins.

Thug Life Day 1: Kamal Haasan’s Hype Crashes at the Box Office With Just ₹17 Crore

A tremendous disappointment — we all hoped Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life would explode at the box office, especially after a fabulous increase of anticipation post-Vikram. The film opened to only ₹17 crore gross in India on Day 1, muting its claim to box office glory and making it yet another runaway box office failure for the veteran actor.

Less Than Average Advances, Plus No Walkups: A Terrible Result

Advances were not that promising to begin with. What shocked trade experts was the almost total absence of a walk-up audience. Theatres in Tamil Nadu concede that they had nearly no footfalls after the first showings; this was particularly evident in those theatres that were less urban.

In terms of timing alone, Thug Life was expected to deliver a minimum of ₹15–16 crore on Day 1, despite ₹13 crore (spanning all releases) being delivered by Tamil Nadu. Alas, there was such poor public reaction that the weak weekend was set and then followed through by most months dying after the first day.

Day 1 India-Wide Box Office Breakdown

Territory Day 1 Gross
Tamil Nadu ₹13.00 Cr.
Andhra Pradesh & Telangana ₹1.75 Cr.
Kerala ₹1.00 Cr.
Rest of India ₹1.25 Cr.
Total India ₹17.00 Cr.

Karnataka Release Blocked, Little National Presence

Thug Life was additionally greyed out on the Karnataka release, as many shows were pulled due to recent political remarks made by Kamal Haasan.

Even in the territories that it did release, there was no momentum for the film — particularly in Hindi and Telugu belts, Thug Life was a complete flop.

What really hurt Thug Life was the absence of national connection, poor marketing, and a star-powered cast to go along with Kamal, which meant that curiosity could not build outside Tamil Nadu.

What Went Wrong After Vikram?

The question now is what went wrong after Kamal’s ₹400 crore blockbuster Vikram released in June 2022 and put him back in good standing at the Tamil box office. But follow-up projects like Indian 2 and now Thug Life have completely undone that narrative.

With Indian 3 also now written off, trade analysts are now worried that Kamal’s promising comeback arc is quickly losing pace.

Non-Theatrical Sales Saved Producers — But Not Buyers

Despite the poor performance in theatrical releases, sources indicate that producers are unscathed due to lucrative deals for OTT and satellite rights — rather, the burden is with buyers and exhibitors, who paid a huge amount during Kamal’s Vikram high!

Thug Life‘s epic failure is a further gut punch for exhibition circuits, who banked on Thug Life during the peak summer holiday period.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life is a prime example of hype failing to equate to ticket sales. With a shocking ₹17 crore total on Day 1 and atrocious word-of-mouth, the film is decidedly another loss in the post-Vikram phase.

Short of a miracle turnaround over the weekend, Thug Life is officially a theatrical non-starter.
