Thug Life: Netizens Slam Trisha’s Role As ‘Pointless’, Demand More Screen Time For Aishwarya Lekshmi

While Thug Life fails to impress overall, netizens are particularly upset over Trisha’s character and are calling for more screen time for Aishwarya Lekshmi.

Thug Life Disappoints: Trisha’s Limited Role Slammed, Aishwarya Lekshmi Steals the Show

After ages of waiting and much excitement, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam streamed Thug Life. Unfortunately, the gangster yarn has proved to be neither a critical nor commercial success. The initial box office numbers opened low at ₹17 crore in India, and audiences are now voicing their disappointment in how the characters were developed.

Viewers especially slammed Trisha for her limited role but also asked for more from Aishwarya Lekshmi‘s empowered, yet underused, character.

Trisha’s Role Branded Inconsequential

Trisha plays Indrani, a mysterious mistress for Kamal’s character Sakthivel, who, leading to release, was said to be an important character. But audiences are now taking to X (formerly Twitter) and voicing that Indrani is inconsequential.

“I expected Trisha to have more meat in the role, but it came off as a placeholder.”
@ChandruReviews

“Trisha’s screen time and impact was so disappointing in #ThugLife. She deserved better.”

Audience Want More Aishwarya Lekshmi’s Role

On the flip side, audiences were enamoured with Aishwarya Lekshmi’s emotional performance, although in a role that only appears in the climax. She plays the long-lost sister of Simbu’s character, and her reunion scene resonated well despite her limited screen time.

“Why would you cast Aishwarya Lekshmi in a crucial role and not give it importance? Such a waste!”
@MadrasVaasi07

“#AishwaryaLekshmi stole the show in just 10 minutes. Could’ve been so much more.”
@meTheKarthik

Fans are now collectively celebrating her performance as the emotional anchor of the film and are questioning the wasted opportunity to develop it.

What Happened With Thug Life?

From the highly anticipated collaboration between Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, Thug Life was going to be a sure-fire winner. 38 years after Nayakan broke the mould for gangster films, both creators were back with a bang.

Except they didn’t have any strong writing, character development, or coherent storytelling—and fans have been left underwhelmed.

The film also starred Simbu, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Abhirami, among others. However, most of the supporting characters, including Aishwarya Lekshmi’s, were given just 5–7 minutes despite having emotional highs.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

In Thug Life, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan sold a promise of cinema and history, but they ultimately disappointed audiences, particularly with Trisha’s character.

On the other hand, Aishwarya Lekshmi’s late-entry, show-stealing performance triggered a social media movement interrogating, “Why wasn’t she given more?”

This speaks volumes to the belief that strong characters remain with the audience, even at a minimal breadth—something Thug Life forgot to attach to their process.
