Deepika Padukone Leaves Spirit, May Be Out of Kalki 2: A Controversy Shaking Bollywood
Deepika Padukone, just off celebrating the birth of her daughter with husband Ranveer Singh in September 2024, finds herself in the middle of two back-to-back casting controversies. First, the news broke that she has left Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s movie Spirit because she wants fewer work hours. Now there are reports she is also leaving Kalki 2.
Deepika Padukone Out Of Spirit: What Happened?
Padukone’s exit from Spirit was widely reported due to supposed creative differences and her demanding she work 6-hour days to accommodate her new life as a mother. All of this left Director Vanga unhappy, and he decided to take to X to voice his feelings about it.

He then accused the unnamed actress (assumed to be Padukone) of “putting down a younger actor” and claimed that she would “never get” the craft of making movies.
Is Trouble Brewing On The Sets Of Kalki 2?
According to reports, Deepika is “almost out” of Kalki 2 as well. What is the reason? The reported tension arose between her and the production because Deepika requested shorter working hours, which the producers claim could jeopardise the schedule of this big FX-heavy franchise.
While Deepika Padukone and the producers of Kalki 2 have yet to confirm anything, the grapevine suggests her involvement in the sequel is “almost off the table”.
Industry Split: Feminism or Unprofessionalism?
The episode has almost split the industry down the middle. There was criticism for the tone of Vanga’s post; however, it got public support from multiple celebrities, including Kajol, Saif Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, and Mani Ratnam, who supported Deepika and pleaded for reasonable working hours, especially as a new mother.
“An 8-hour working shift is not unreasonable in 2025,” said Kajol.
Additionally, this conversation could trigger a broader discussion throughout Bollywood with regard to gender equality and work-life balance, in addition to the relationships between actors and directors for large-budget films.
What’s Next for Kalki 2?
Kalki 2898 AD, which stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone, is certainly one of the largest sci-fi spectacles in Indian cinema. The franchise, which combines a little mythology and dystopia, has Deepika playing a significant role in the first film.
While Kalki 2 is early in preproduction, there are already reports that the producers have begun a search for a replacement, assuming that the fallout with Deepika is permanent.
