Tom Hanks REACTS To Laal Singh Chaddha Being Inspired By Forest Gump: ‘Those Films Were Saying Same Thing But…’

Tom Hanks praised Laal Singh Chaddha as "extraordinary" and "glorious," highlighting its unique perspective as an adaptation of Forrest Gump.

Tom Hanks recently opened up about Laal Singh Chaddha, the Bollywood remake of his iconic film Forrest Gump, expressing admiration for its unique approach. 

During a conversation with Zoom, the Hollywood legend praised the Indian adaptation, calling it “extraordinary” and “glorious.” He acknowledged how it added a fresh cultural twist to the story.

Hanks, who’s been promoting his latest film Here, revealed he was truly moved by Laal Singh Chaddha

“I saw that. Extraordinary. I think it’s a testament to how film grows on film.I think it’s a testament to how film grows on film. I think all of us have seen movies that have been incorporated into the rest of our creative process, sometimes bleakly, but sometimes very specifically,” he said.

He noted how adaptations often reflect unique cultural perspectives while staying true to the universal themes that make a story timeless. “Every now and again, there is a film that enters the worldwide consciousness that you cannot forget, that you cannot escape,” Hanks remarked.

On What’s Common & Different Between The Two Films

Reflecting on the differences and similarities between the two films, Hanks appreciated the way Laal Singh Chaddha brought a distinct cultural lens while retaining the heart of Forrest Gump. “Look at the difference and yet look at the similarities despite the filmmakers and the cultures that they were in. In many ways, those films were saying the same thing but with the added prospect of the new perspective that came along with it, “I think it’s to be celebrated. It was a glorious thing to behold,” he added.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also helmed Here, the film is an adaptation of Winston Groom’s novel of the same name. Laal Singh Chaddha, which released in 2022, brings the classic tale to an Indian setting, focusing on the country’s own defining events. Co-produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, Jyoti Deshpande, and Ajit Andhare, this Indian adaptation was helmed by director Advait Chandan, known for his work in Secret Superstar.

Actor Atul Kulkarni, who adapted the screenplay, preserved the story’s essence while embedding it in the cultural backdrop of India. Aamir Khan took on the title role, portraying the character with his signature dedication.

Alongside him, Kareena Kapoor Khan played a role similar to Robin Wright’s, bringing depth to the love story. The cast also included Naga Chaitanya, Manav Vij, and Mona Singh in significant roles.

Set in Punjab, Laal Singh Chaddha weaves a tale that’s both personal and political, mirroring Forrest’s journey while touching on events that have shaped contemporary India.
