One tragic night in June 1997, a fire broke out at the South Delhi Uphaar Cinema, killing 59 people and injuring 100 more. Many others have had this catastrophe permanently seared in their memories for more than 20 years. Trial by Fire, a Netflix original film that will be released on January 13th, 2023, is based on the best-selling book “Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale” of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy by Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy. Endemol Shine India and House of Talkies are the producers of the show.
Director Prashant Nair expertly conveys the tragic yet resolute journey of the parents, Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, who lost their two children to the fire, using his novelistic storytelling and non-linear approach to chronology throughout the series. In addition to focusing on the other lives affected and devastated by the fire, the limited series will show their never-ending struggles for justice over a twenty-four-year period. Rajshri Deshpande, Abhay Deol, Rajesh Tailang, Ashish Vidyarthi, Anupam Kher, Ratna Pathak, Shilpa Shukla, and Shardul Bharadwaj are among the outstanding cast members of Trial By Fire.
“Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy are inspiring examples of the kind of resilience and fortitude it takes to move the needle even slightly in this country. What happened to them and the way they have been forced to fight for justice is truly horrific and, unfortunately, there are countless other people today in similar situations. We are grateful to Netflix for being such courageous partners in telling this story.” Director Prashant Nair said. On January 13, 2023, Trial By Fire will make its world premiere exclusively on Netflix.
