Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan are putting their faith in a fresh directorial voice, and they are doing it with visible conviction. As Udta Teer builds momentum ahead of its October 9, 2026 theatrical release, both actors have opened up about why Aakash Kaushik impressed them on set and why his first film as director did not feel like a debut effort at all.
The comedy adventure pairs Ayushmann and Sara in a film backed by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, with Kaushik stepping behind the camera after building a writing career in mainstream Hindi cinema. The film marks his directorial debut, but the cast’s comments make it clear that his command over the material left a strong impact.
Ayushmann Backs A Writer With A Distinct Voice
Ayushmann, who has often collaborated with new filmmakers over the years, said that instinct still guides his choices. “More than half of my hit films are with first-time directors. So, I am a risk-taker. First-time directors who come with something exciting always bring a script and everything with them,” he said.
He also underlined what made Kaushik stand out to him creatively. “Aakash Kaushik is a very seasoned writer. He has written Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and many comedy-based films. But this film is still very different from the films he has written because this is a very new-age comedy. Its treatment is very fresh, and he is an FTII graduate.”
Ayushmann added, “He is very intelligent, and more than that, he also understands the masses. So, it is a good combination, and we are very excited because he has a very sharp brain and has written a fantastic script. Hopefully, you will like the film.”
Sara Ali Khan On Why The Film Felt Like A Safe Yes
Sara echoed that confidence and said Kaushik never came across like someone directing his first feature. “Working with Aakash sir never felt like this was the first time he was doing it. I think he had such a strong hold on his script that he knew exactly what kind of character he had to play,” she said.
She also revealed that Ayushmann’s involvement reassured her about the project. “When I found out that Ayushmann was doing this film, the pressure I had gone away. I felt that if Ayushmann had chosen it, the script must be good, so I said yes.”

Written and directed by Aakash Kaushik, Udta Teer stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan alongside Raghubir Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Gulshan Grover, Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Supriya Pilgaonkar and the late Mukul Dev. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on October 9, 2026.
