Twelve years after his memorable role alongside Sridevi in English Vinglish (2012), Adil Hussain is set to share the screen with the late actress’ daughter, Janhvi Kapoor, in the upcoming film Ulajh.
In a recent interview, the versatile actor shared his thoughts on the debate surrounding actor fees and the cost of the entourage.
Adil Hussain On Actors’ Entourage Cost
Hussain, known for his minimalist lifestyle, compared the extravagance in personal life to the choices actors make in their careers.
He told Bollywood Hungama, “It is like saying why should someone have a 26-storey for a few people in the family. But then that person has the freedom to build whatever he wants. I believe in minimalism and that ‘less is more.’ I believe in ‘decent poverty,’ that is, you have just enough; you have what is really needed, not what you want. Your desire can go like wild horses in every direction. As a practitioner of art, it is important to be moderate in everything, not just in wealth consumption but in every aspect of life.”
He further elaborated on the consequences of indulgence, stating, “If you call yourself an artist and if you indulge in opulence, then you have to face the consequences of it. I am not saying it’s good or bad but there are consequences of wanting and consuming more things than you really need because you are depriving some people. There are limited resources on this finite planet. One needs to be aware of what kind of example you are leaving behind for the next generation.”
Hussain also shared a recent experience where his minimalist approach stood out. While reviewing a contract from a major production house, he was asked about the size of his team. “They asked me, ‘How many people do you have in your team?’. I said, ‘None’. I further said, ‘You give me a make-up person, you give me a dedicated spot boy at your own cost, a large makeup van and a car with a driver.’ It’s a conscious decision I have taken as I have to walk my talk. I can’t just lecture people and don’t practice what I preach,” Hussain explained. This approach, he believes, is a personal decision rooted in an evolved, conscious mindset.
On His Upcoming Film Ulajh
As for Ulajh, Hussain is excited rather than nervous about its release. He said, “I am not nervous and I shouldn’t be. But I am very curious for sure to know what the reaction of the audience is going to be. I live in Delhi and I don’t think a premiere is going to be held here. But I’d like to quietly go in a morning show and watch it wearing my mask! I’ll take a few of my friends too.”
