Priyanka Chopra Jonas is not treating her return to Indian cinema like a nostalgic detour. She is calling it a milestone. At the centre of the buzz is SS Rajamouli’s next mega spectacle Varanasi, a film that has already been positioned as a scale-first, event title long before a single frame hits theatres.
The actor, who has spent the past few years building a steady Hollywood and global streaming run, has now put a very specific stamp on her Telugu debut with Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu: “career-defining.” And in an era where stars carefully guard adjectives, that choice is doing a lot of heavy lifting.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas Puts “Career-defining” Label On SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi
In her latest comments on the film, Priyanka Chopra Jonas described Varanasi as a “career-defining” project, underlining how she views the Rajamouli collaboration not as a homecoming headline, but as a pivotal creative bet.
The film, which has been teased for months under the codename “GlobeTrotter,” has also been unveiled publicly as a time-travel adventure rooted in mythology. At the Hyderabad launch, Mahesh Babu, stepping into his first collaboration with Rajamouli, called it “a once-in-a-lifetime project,” adding, “I will make everyone proud. The whole of India will be proud of us.”
Varanasi is set for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027, as confirmed through the official poster reveal shared by the team. Priyanka echoed the excitement while sharing the announcement, writing, “So much love and excitement for this.”
Varanasi Film Details So Far
Varanasi is directed by SS Rajamouli and stars Mahesh Babu in the lead role as Rudra, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas playing Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran essaying Kumbha. The film is produced by Sri Durga Arts, with Showing Business also associated with the project.
The premise, as positioned so far, points to a globe-spanning time-travel narrative anchored in Indian mythology, with Rudra’s mission spiralling into a larger battle against a powerful antagonist. The film’s release date is officially locked for 2027, making it one of the biggest confirmed theatrical titles on the horizon.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ Recent And Upcoming Work
Priyanka’s last few years have balanced studio films and streaming-led star vehicles. She headlined the romantic drama Love Again (2023) and then moved into action with Prime Video’s Citadel (series, 2023), which became a key global title for the platform. In 2025, she appeared in the action-comedy Heads of State (Prime Video, 2025) opposite Idris Elba and John Cena.
On the upcoming slate, Priyanka leads The Bluff, which is set to release on Prime Video on February 25, 2026. Beyond Hollywood, Varanasi (April 7, 2027) is now the most high-profile Indian project on her calendar, and the “career-defining” tag makes it clear she is aiming for impact, not just presence.
