Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, ‘Bawaal’ stars Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor. It is set to be released on April 7, 2023. It has been shot in various locations such as Berlin, Paris, Poland, Amsterdam, Warsa and Krakow and is considered to be Varun Dhawan’s big-budget film. It may bypass a theatrical release and instead release directly on an OTT platform.
It’s believed an OTT release may be a safer bet for the producers in the current scenario where the theatrical business is still recovering from the pandemic. It’s important to note how actors’ previous movies like Bhediya, Milli didn’t work at the Box-office when they chose for theatrical releases.
Films opting for OTT
With the closure of theatres and the fear of COVID transmission, many films had to be delayed or cancelled. OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar provide a much-needed alternative. Many Bollywood films, including big-budget productions, have opted for an OTT release to ensure that their work reaches their audience.
Makers consider the economics and revenue model while deciding on their call to either theatrical or OTT release. The convenience of streaming platforms has led to a shift in consumer behaviour. Hence, film makers choose to go for OTT, where audiences can watch films at their convenience, without having to visit a cinema hall.
