Vicky Kaushal has once again shown his dedication to acting. In Chhaava, he plays Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, and the role was definitely not an easy one.
Every day on set, he carried around 15-20 kg of costumes and accessories. The film, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, has had a strong start at the box office. Now, details about the intense preparation behind the scenes are coming to light.
Chhaava Costume Designer Shares Interesting Details
Costume designer Sheetal Sharma made sure every detail was authentic. She worked with historians from Aurangabad, Pune, and Nashik to ensure historical accuracy.
She shared, “There are no visual references of Sambhaji Maharaj, so we relied on descriptions and historical texts.”
Unlike many period dramas that use pastel shades, Chhaava sticks to the vibrant colours of Maratha culture. “White, gold, and deep maroons dominate the palette, just like in history,” Sharma added.
Every piece of jewellery and footwear was handcrafted by artisans. Even the fabrics had detailed patterns created with custom wooden blocks.
Vicky Kaushal Wore 15-20 Kg Of Costumes And Accessories During Shoot
Playing a warrior king came with its own challenges for Vicky. His royal attire, including a white angrakha with zardozi embroidery, weighed around 18-20 kg. His turban alone added another 4-5 kg. Shooting in the scorching heat of Wai, Satara, and Nashik made it even tougher.
Sheetal said, “On a daily basis, Vicky was carrying around 15-20 kg of weight just in clothing and accessories. This wasn’t easy, especially while shooting in the heat of Wai, Satara, and Nashik. I remember him saying – Can you stop putting things on me? But Laxman sir would take one look at him and say, ‘We need more!’ So, we added another layer- a three-string pearl mala with a medallion. At one point, Vicky joked that he felt like he was inside a jewellery store. But no one could have pulled the role better than Vicky for sure.”
To truly become Sambhaji Maharaj, Vicky went through a huge transformation. At the start of the film’s production, he weighed around 75 kg. By the time shooting began, he had bulked up to 105 kg. Wearing multiple layers of cotton angrakhas and battle armour made every scene physically demanding.
Rashmika Dressed Up In Heavy Paithani & Kanjivaram Sarees
Rashmika Mandanna also underwent a major transformation. “When you see her, you won’t recognise her,” Sharma stated.
She wore heavy Paithani and Kanjivaram sarees, along with traditional chokers, anklets, and footwear designed to reflect the grandeur of Maratha royalty. Even getting dressed each day was a long process, as every detail had to be perfect.
Chhaava Is Currently In Theatres
Chhaava made a grand entry into cinemas today. By 2 PM on its opening day, the film had already crossed Rs 11.20 crore in national chains. Industry experts predict that it will easily surpass Rs 25 crore net on its first day. This makes it the biggest opening for a historical drama in recent times.
