Vicky Kaushal-starrer Chhaava has become the first Hindi film to sell over 12 million tickets on BookMyShow, surpassing Stree 2 and other blockbusters at the box office.

Bollywood’s latest historical drama Chhaava is making box office history. The Vicky Kaushal-starrer has become the first Hindi film to sell over 12 million tickets on BookMyShow. It has surpassed major blockbuster releases like Stree 2, showing its strong audience pull.

Chhaava Has Been Watched Multiple Times By Many Viewers

Ashish Saksena, COO of BookMyShow, called the film’s milestone a major achievement. He also spoke about Vicky Kaushal’s role as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, saying it was one of his best performances. He added that Rashmika Mandanna’s role as Maharani Yesubai brought emotional depth to the film. 

The movie has seen strong demand, especially in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Nashik, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow. Saksena also noted that many viewers have watched it multiple times.

Film’s Global Collection Expected To Cross Rs 800 Cr Soon

Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films, Chhaava tells the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Based on Shivaji Sawant’s Marathi novel Chhava, the film focuses on his conflict with the Mughal Empire under Aurangzeb.

Since its release on February 14, 2025, the film has earned over Rs 750 crore worldwide. It has performed especially well in Maharashtra, where Sambhaji Maharaj holds historical significance. The film is expected to cross Rs 800 crore soon.

Chhaava: Plot Details And More

The story covers Sambhaji Maharaj’s rise to power, his resistance against Aurangzeb, and his personal struggles. It also highlights his relationship with Maharani Yesubai and his fight for Swarajya. The film combines historical events with dramatic storytelling.

The cast includes Vicky Kaushal as Sambhaji Maharaj, Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, and Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb. Ashutosh Rana, Diana Penty, Divya Dutta, and Vineet Kumar Singh are also part of the ensemble.

With a 161-minute runtime, Chhaava features large-scale battle sequences, detailed period costumes, and striking visuals. A.R. Rahman’s music adds to the film’s tone.

Though there has been some debate about historical accuracy, the film has drawn a large audience. Its success shows that historical dramas continue to attract viewers at the box office.
