A roundtable discussion recently turned heated between South producer Naga Vamsi and Bollywood’s Boney Kapoor. The debate, which was part of a special 2024 year-end reflection on Indian cinema, shed light on the growing tension between South Indian and Bollywood filmmakers. The event (hosted by Galatta Plus) brought together industry veterans to discuss the year’s significant milestones.
Boney Kapoor & Naga Vamsi’s Clash On Dominance Of South Films
The clash began when the two producers shared their thoughts on the increasing dominance of South Indian films. Boney Kapoor has a long history in Bollywood. He pointed out how South films, especially Telugu and Tamil, have found success internationally.
He explained, “Telugu films have a unique market in the US, Tamil films in Singapore and Malaysia, and the Gulf region is, of course, a cosmopolitan area.” However, Naga Vamsi quickly interrupted & challenged Boney’s comments.
Vamsi boldly claimed that South Indian cinema had changed how Bollywood views films. He told Boney, “We, South Indians, have changed the way you [Bollywood] look at cinema. You guys were stuck making films for Bandra and Juhu. You saw a shift with Baahubali, RRR, Animal, and Jawan.”
This statement sparked immediate disagreement. Boney shook his head and disagreed. He said, “That’s wrong.” Vamsi continued to argue that Bollywood had only recently acknowledged the global success of South films.
The debate escalated further when Vamsi pointed out that Boney had mentioned South films like Baahubali and RRR but had not referenced any Hindi films when discussing the impact of cinema.
In response, Boney defended his comments and said, “In this forum, we can’t discuss every film we know. We need to speak in broader terms. I’m not ignoring Hindi cinema. I know those films, but it’s not about Telugu cinema teaching Indians something new.”
Boney Kapoor Highlights Allu Arjun Being A Big B Fan, Talks About Barrier In Cinema
He also added, “Even Allu Arjun, star of Pushpa 2, has publicly said that he’s a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan.”
Boney then emphasised that the real barrier in cinema isn’t language but the universal appeal of good stories, no matter the language. Vamsi, however, countered by pointing out that films like Baahubali, RRR, KGF 2, Pushpa 2, and Kalki 2898 AD—all major successes in Bollywood—had been made by Telugu filmmakers.
Boney claimed that Vamsi was ignoring Bollywood’s iconic blockbusters, such as Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, which had also set box-office records. He reminded Vamsi, “You can’t just erase history to make your point.”

Now that’s the problem! This ARROGANCE is a big issue! Superstars from #South are so humble but some of the people around them get too carried away by success. This guy is not even letting a veteran like #BoneyKapoor complete his words. Learn manners.

The exchange didn’t end without criticism. Vamsi’s confident and forceful tone was labelled arrogant by some viewers, who felt he was disrespecting Boney Kapoor, a veteran in the industry.
On social media, users pointed out how Vamsi interrupted Boney and dismissed his views, calling it rude and disrespectful.
Both producers have achieved significant success. Naga Vamsi is behind films like Bheemla Nayak and Rang De, while Boney Kapoor has a legacy that includes classics such as Mr India, No Entry, and the recently released Maidaan.
