Vivek Agnihotri Gets Troll For Celebrating ‘The Kashmir Files’ In Oscar Shortlist As A Result Of Limited Run In LA! Details Inside

The Kashmir Files' is based on the mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the year 1990.

As soon as The Kashmir Files was released, The film has been in highlights either for the appreciation or the controversy it caused. The movie became a topic of discussion when the Jury Chair of the International Film Festival of India, Nadav Lapid, called the movie a ‘vulgar, propaganda’.

Now, the movie again came in news when Director Vivek Agnihotri announced that the film has been shortlisted for the Oscars 2023. Agnihotri took to his Twitter handle and announced, “The Kashmir Files has been shortlisted for Oscars 2023 in the first list of The Academy. It’s one of the 5 films from India. I wish all of them very best. A great year for Indian cinema”.

 

At first, fans congrat the team but when the FYC list for Oscars was dug out, the truth came across that The film is one of the 301 films that have just been deemed ‘eligible’. For the unversed, Any film can make the cut in the list of eligible films for Oscars nominations if it satisfies the basic criteria that demands “the film must have opened in a commercial theater in 1 of 6 US metropolitan areas; and completed a run of 7 days at that particular venue”.

Just after the truth got revealed, people started trolling Vivek Agnihotri for the fake announcement. While one user wrote, “Like I could literally make a 40 minute feature with footage of just a trash can and release it in a commercial theatre in LA and make sure it runs for 7 consecutive days and be considered as eligible,” another commented, “The Kashmir Files, more like That Agnihotri Lies”.

Besides netizens, some celebs also reacted to it. Aseem Chhabra wrote, “Let me make this clear – that filmmaker who is claiming his divisive film has been “shortlisted” for the Oscars is LYING. His film has only qualified for the Oscars. Any film can qualify if it has a limited run in LA (sic).” Reacting to it in a sarcastic way, Hansal wrote, “You are a genocide denying anti-national (sic).”

 

Raees director Rahul Dholakia also clarified the Oscar eligibility criteria and wrote, “Oscar eligible basically means – the film should have released in the cinema halls of any two major U.S. cities ( any/ La / Chicago..) from Jan- dec 2022 for at least 7 days – (or something like that)- that’s all. ( or so I think ) good luck to all those who will be nominated.”

 

The Kashmir Files’ is based on the mass exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the year 1990. Makers had sent the film for the FYI category but the film did not get any nominations. On the other hand, Telugu film RRR won the Golden Globe Award in Best Song category for ‘Naatu Naatu’. Meanwhile, the final nominations of the Academy Awards will be announced on January 24.
