Wars Of Sequel: Will Akshay Kumar’s Oh My God 2 Surprise Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 At Box Office?

In the past, we have seen some iconic clashes at the box office, and it’s not a new phenomenon. Lagaan and Gadar clashed at the ticket window, Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar were also released on the same date. But all these films performed well commercially. Now, Akshay Kumar‘s upcoming film OMG 2 is also releasing on the same date as Sunny Deol‘s Gadar 2.

Both these films are completely different from each other in terms of genre, treatment, and canvas. And coincidentally, both are also sequels to successful films. Akshay’s OMG 2 follows the critically and commercially successful Oh My God, which tackled the issue of fake godmen in India. The film had a beautiful combination of social commentary with entertainment values.

The sequel, which also stars Yami Gautam and Pankaj Tripathi, reportedly explores the issues in the Indian educational system. People who are into stories that are socially conscious will surely give this one a try in the theatres. The posters of the film, featuring Akshay as Lord Shiva, have also created a strong buzz around the film.

Gadar 2, Old Wine In Old Bottle

Gadar 2, on the other hand, is a sequel to 2001’s Gadar which was a major commercial success. But despite its success, people generally don’t remember the film (maybe except for the handpump scene). Starring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, the film is directed by Anil Sharma. So basically it’s the same old team from the first film. This is in contrast with OMG 2, which has a fresh director named Amit Rai. While OMG 2 looks interesting and fresh, Gadar 2 promos feel like they are still trapped in the 90s-early 2000s Bollywood.

The makers don’t seem to realize that Sunny Deol is not a star, the way he was when the first film came out. The same is the case with Ameesha Patel. Also, the promos don’t show anything new. It’s the same things that worked two decades ago. An angry Sunny Deol, India-Pakistan, and some fight scenes. A lot has changed since then and the audiences have evolved. So it would be interesting to see which one of these films is able to impress the audiences. But the odds are with OMG 2 as of now.
