The movie-going public appears to agree that there’s something about this time of year that makes you want to watch horror films. Less than two weeks after its debut, Paramount Pictures reports that the most recent horror film, Smile, has raked in more than $100 million worldwide. The US box office has been led by “Smile,” a brand-new low-budget horror film from Paramount, for two weekends in a row. On Wednesday, Paramount revealed that it had earned $102 million worldwide, $55.5 million of which came from the US.
It only cost $17 million to produce, but its revenue has outpaced that sum six times over. The film is the most recent illustration of the impact of horror in theatres. It has been the only consistent genre at the box office in recent years, aside from superhero movies. And right now, with so few new movies being released in theatres compared to before the pandemic, it’s especially necessary.
Smile features Sosie Bacon as the therapist Dr. Rose Cotter. Rose has a tragic encounter where a patient she is caring for passes away in front of her, and she then starts to have strange and terrifying occurrences. If she wants to survive what is happening to her, she must face her history. In his first-ever feature film, Parker Finn wrote and directed Smile. Starring in it are Bacon, Rob Morgan, Kal Penn, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert, Caitlin Stasey, and Jessie T. Usher.
Many people credit the film’s popularity to the viral marketing effort that inspired it.
