Yami Gautam To Star In Aanand L Rai’s Horror Comedy ‘Nayi Naveli’, Film Based On Indian Folklore To Go On Floors In February

After her intense performance in the courtroom drama Haq, Yami Gautam is stepping into a new genre. The actress has been locked to headline a horror-comedy titled Nayi Naveli, produced by Aanand L Rai‘s Colour Yellow Productions. The film is set to go on floors in February 2026.

This marks Yami Gautam’s first collaboration with Colour Yellow and her foray into the horror-comedy genre that has become Hindi cinema’s most reliable crowd-pleaser in recent times.

Based On Indian Folklore And Mythology

According to reports, Nayi Naveli is a horror-comedy rooted in Indian folklore and mythology. The film is penned by Divy Nidhi Sharma, who previously wrote Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par (2025), Laapataa Ladies (2024), and Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (2024), among others.

This is Sharma’s second collaboration with Aanand L Rai after the yet-unreleased romance Nakhrewaalii.

Yami Wanted Something Lighter After Haq

Sources reveal that after Haq, Yami was looking to do something in a lighter zone, but with substance. “Nayi Naveli is that perfect combination because while it’s a funny film, it’s not without elements that offer intrigue and emotionality. It is being envisioned on a big scale,” said an insider.

The humour in the film is atypical of Aanand L Rai’s slice-of-life productions, promising a fresh take on the horror-comedy genre.

Tamil Director Makes Hindi Debut

Nayi Naveli will reportedly be helmed by Tamil filmmaker Balaji Mohan, known for Maari (2015), marking his Hindi directorial debut. While the script is ready, the film is currently in pre-production, and the rest of the ensemble cast is still being locked.

The film is described as an ensemble piece, suggesting more casting announcements are expected soon.
