YJHD, Veer Zaara, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Tumbbad – Biggest Bollywood Re-Releases That Surprised At The Box Office

YJHD, Veer Zaara and many other re-releases brought nostalgia to the big screen and achieved impressive box office results.

The hit 2013 film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) returned to cinemas on January 3, 2025. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Kalki Koechlin, it quickly made Rs 1.25 crore on its first day. This re-release is part of a growing trend of Bollywood movies returning to theatres and surprising audiences with strong box office performances.

Rockstar, Veer Zaara And Kal Ho Naa Ho’s Impressive Re-Releases

Many re-releases have seen impressive earnings. One example is Rockstar, which came back to theatres on May 17, 2024. The 2011 film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, was a semi-hit when it was first released. However, its re-release earned Rs 5.65 crore within a month, showing how nostalgia can still attract viewers. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, appealed to both old fans and new viewers.

Laila Majnu (starring Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri) was a flop when it originally released in 2018. However, after its re-release on August 9, 2024, the romantic drama saw a significant turnaround due to strong word-of-mouth. While the film had earned just over Rs 2 crore in its original run, it grossed an impressive Rs 8.6 crore within one month of its theatrical re-run.

Another major re-release was Veer Zaara, a 2004 film by Yash Chopra. This romantic drama, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, and Rani Mukerji, returned to theatres on September 13, 2024. It grossed Rs 106 crore worldwide, becoming one of the most successful re-releases. Its emotional storyline continues to draw audiences, highlighting its lasting popularity.

Kal Ho Naa Ho, a classic from 2003 starring Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, was re-released in November 2024. In just 17 days, it made Rs 5.60 crore, showing that its charm is still strong after two decades.

Tumbbad’s Record-Breaking Re-Run At The Box Office

Tumbbad, a 2018 horror film directed by Rahi Anil Barve, made an impressive comeback on September 13, 2024. It originally earned Rs 15.5 crore, but its re-release grossed Rs 38 crore. This made it the highest-earning re-release since films like Titanic and Ghilli. This shows that even niche films can have a big impact when given a second chance.

These re-releases prove how powerful nostalgia can be for box office success and audiences still love to revisit their favourite movies, bringing new life to older hits.
