The movie, based on Anurag Pathak’s book Twelfth Fail: Hara Wahi Jo Ladaa Nahi, initially considered Varun for the role of Manoj. Pathak and several team members felt Varun was a great fit. However, director Vidhu Vinod Chopra had reservations.

In the behind-the-scenes documentary Zero Se Restart, directed by Jaskunwar Singh Kohli, Chopra admits to doubts about casting Varun. While he praises Varun’s acting and screen presence, he shares why he felt Varun wasn’t the right choice for the role.

The 73-minute docu-film also includes unseen behind-the-scenes footage, offering a fresh perspective on the film’s creation. It’s the first time such footage has been released in theatres, and audiences will be curious to see how this concept fares on the big screen. However, the reason for releasing this footage remains somewhat unclear.
12th Fail went on to become a huge success, largely due to Vikrant Massey’s remarkable performance as Manoj. The film also tells the story of his relationship with Shraddha Joshi, played by Medha Shankar, who also cracked the IAS exams. Fans might now wonder how the film would have turned out if Varun Dhawan had played the lead.
