Zootopia 2 has just achieved something that only one other Hollywood film has ever done before. The Disney animation has crossed the massive USD 500 million mark in China, making it only the second Hollywood movie in history to reach this incredible milestone in a single overseas market.
The film grossed a solid USD 55.4 million in its third weekend in China alone. This means the movie is showing tremendous staying power even after nearly three weeks in theatres. The drop from the previous weekend was only 52.2 percent, which is considered a strong hold for any film at this stage. On its third Sunday, Zootopia 2 collected USD 19 million, which is now the biggest ever third Sunday for any non Chinese film in the country.
Running Total Reaches USD 503.8 Million In Just 19 Days
After 19 days of its theatrical run in China, the running total for Zootopia 2 has reached USD 503.8 million. This is a phenomenal achievement that very few Hollywood films have even come close to. The film is now officially the second highest grossing Hollywood movie ever in China.
The only film ahead of it is Avengers: Endgame, which holds the top spot with a gigantic lifetime total of USD 632.1 million. This means Zootopia 2 needs approximately USD 130 million more to dethrone the Marvel superhero epic and claim the number one position among all Hollywood releases in Chinese cinema history.
Can It Claim The Top Spot?
The big question now is whether Zootopia 2 can sustain its momentum and overtake Avengers: Endgame to become the highest grossing Hollywood film ever in China. The challenge will be the upcoming release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is expected to create a massive wave at the Chinese box office.
If Zootopia 2 can maintain strong holds even after the Avatar sequel arrives, it has a real chance of creating this historic record. However, the competition from James Cameron’s highly anticipated film will be very tough to overcome.
Global Box Office Crosses USD 1 Billion Mark
On the worldwide front, Zootopia 2 has already crossed the USD 1 billion milestone on its second Friday. The film is now expected to finish its entire theatrical run somewhere between USD 1.5 billion to USD 1.7 billion globally.
