Movie Review: Adipurush Is A Colossal Disappointment In All Technical Aspects, Prabhas’ Stardom Will Fail To Save This Mess

Adipurush
, the highly anticipated Indian film directed by Om Raut and produced by Bhushan Kumar, is set to release on June 16, 2023, across 6500 plus screens in India. The film stars Prabhas as Raghava and Kriti Sanon as Janaki. Film is produced by Bhushan Kumar and directed by Om Raut.

Plot

Adipurush showcases the Yuddha Kanda in Ramayana. The movie begins with Lord Rama, aka Raghava (Prabhas), getting banished from his kingdom Ayodhya for 14 years at the decree of his father, Dasaratha. It is Bharata’s mother and Dasaradha’s younger wife, Kaikeyi, who demands that Lord Rama be sent to the forest so that her son be crowned. Sita, aka Janaki (Kriti Sanon), and Seshu, aka Lakshmana (Sunny Singh), accompany Lord Rama in exile. One day, the demon king Ravana (Saif Ali Khan) abducts Sita by diverting Rama and Seshu with a magical deer. Later, Rama meets Hanuman (Devdatte Naga), and the rest of the movie is about how Lord Rama won over Ravana and brought back Sita.

Performances

Prabhas as Lord Ram is first rate and he delivers an honest performance. His walk and charisma suit the character perfectly. Sharad Kelkar’s dubbing add to his performance yet again after Baahubali. Kriti Sanon as Janaki is strictly average as she looks good but her dialogue delivery and mannerism are not ideal fit for the character. Saif Ali Khan does his job well as an actor but costume and make up make him look like clown.

Devdatte Nage, the Marathi actor as Lord Hanuman is best part of the film. Sunny Singh, Vatsal Sheth, and Sonal Chauhan are below par.

Analysis

While the first half had too much to offer, the second half failed to take off. It starts on a dull note as the proceedings showcased look slow paced here. Climax takes the major share of the screen time, becoming an exhaustive watch after a point of time. The editing team should have reduced the length by 15-20 minutes to make things crispier.

All the negative buzz around VFX after initial teaser reflected in the film as Vfx is very poorly done. The teaser received severe flak from one and all, and hence the team reworked on the VFX works for a long time. But the end result is unsatisfactory in this aspect. For a movie claiming to be of 500 crore budget, the visual effects are tacky.

Ajay-Atul excelled as music director. Shivoham and Jai Shree Ram songs stand out and are sure to evoke goosebumps in cinemas. The background score by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara is too loud and strictly average.

The costumes designed by Nachiket Barve is inconsistent with the era. The production design created by Priya Suhass and Nishanth Jogdand is completely misfit as Lanka seems like to imported from western drama. The 3D quality of the film is so poor that most of the parts look dark.

Karthik Palani’s cinematography is decent. The movie needs some serious editing, especially as far as the second half is concerned. Action of the film is another let down as nothing seems new:

Om Raut is the main culprit here as he is responsible for some questionable casting, poor editing, lazy action and b grade Vfx. Film is so technically weak that performances do not matter after a point. He failed to showcase his command to deliver a massive film.

Verdict

After Radhe Shyam, Adipurush is another missed opportunity for Prabhas to cement his stardom pan India. Film will struggle on weekdays in Hindi market after initial euphoria will calm down after weekend and reviews will come into the foray. Director Om Raut let down a potential classic.
