Movie Review: Aditya Roy Kapur And Mrunal Thakur Starrer Gumraah Is A Taut Thriller, Suffers Due To Below Par Technical Aspects

‘Gumraah’ is official remake of 2019 Tamil film ‘Thadam’ which was also based upon real events which is explained towards the climax. Film has Aditya Roy Kapur in double role along with Mrunal Thakur as cop and Vedika Pinto as supporting female lead. Film is produced by Murad Khetani’s Cine1 Studio and Bhushan Kumar’s T Series.

Plot:

While investigating a homicide, Inspector Shivani Mathur (Mrunal Thakur) discovers the main suspect has a lookalike (Aditya Roy Kapur) Arjun Saigal and Ronnie ; and the evidence point to both of them. Things turn complicated when secrets related to the case unravel. Who is the real killer and will Shivani crack the case?

Performances:

Aditya Roy Kapur is compelling in both the characters, Arjun Saigal and Ronnie. He balances act between two characters and deliver an honest act. Mrunal Thakur as cop is impressive and probably the best act of the film. Vedika Pinto is decent is brief role.

Analysis:

Writers Aseem Arora and Magizh Thirumeni’s screenplay is uneven as at times film drags specially in first half. Director Ketkar’s work is also strictly average and too much narrative unfolds in flashbacks. The evidence pointing towards both the guys equally, is well done. The movie does not use tropes of double role fares, in that, it does not overdo the mistaken identity conflict. Despite being a straightforward story, the plot twists are fair, but treatment by director is amateurish at places.

The film is based on real-life incidents, which is the best part of the film. In the climax, makers have elaborated all with finesse.

Ketan Sodha’s background score lacks novelty, and the soundtrack has no Chartbuster song. It’s a rare flop album from Mithoon.

Verdict:

Film is average watch and one should not mind watching it on a lazy afternoon. But it’s hard to believe that many people will turn up to watch this remake in cinemas. Lack of Chartbuster and below par direction are the main culprits of the film.
