Shaitaan Movie Review: Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan Deliver Steller Performances In A Film Driven By An Atmospheric Narrative

Ajay Devgn‘s ‘Shaitaan‘ is a supernatural thriller that has captivated audiences with its chilling narrative and stellar performances. Directed by Vikas Bahl, the film portrays a family’s fight against a sinister force.

Shaitaan: Plot

The film follows Kabir Rishi (Ajay Devgn), a father whose peaceful life is disrupted when a mysterious figure (R Madhavan) arrives at their farmhouse. The stranger’s malevolent intentions unfold as he gains control over Kabir’s daughter, leading to a series of chilling events that test the family’s resilience. Directed by Vikas Bahl, the movie promises a classic battle between good and evil, with a family representing righteousness against a malevolent force.

Before long, every secret is revealed, and the element of surprise disappears as events unfold sequentially: the demon shares insights on ‘vashikaran’ (domination), Janvi succumbs to his influence, her mother (Jyothika) grows increasingly terrified, and her father, completely at a loss, reaches the limits of his patience.

Shaitaan: Performances

Ajay Devgn’s portrayal of Kabir is a tour de force, capturing the essence of a father’s desperation with authenticity and intensity. Devgn, channeling his ‘Drishyam’ persona as the quintessential family man and protector, appears unyielding and resolute.

R Madhavan, as the antagonist, delivers a performance that is both nuanced and terrifying, cementing his status as a versatile actor. Madhavan fully embraces the exaggerated nature of his role, initially instilling fear with his sinister chuckles and occasional grins.

Ajay Devgn’s love for his family vs. R Madhavan’s chaotic act won’t let you blink your eyes for a moment. The supporting cast, including Jyotika and Janki Bodiwala, deliver performances that are both compelling and emotionally resonant.

Special mention goes to the young talent portraying Dhruv, who delivers a superb performance alongside the seasoned actors.

Shaitaan: Analysis

Shaitaan delves into the realm of black magic and the supernatural, a theme that resonates with Indian audiences’ fascination with the occult. The film’s portrayal of ‘vashikaran’—a form of mind control—and its implications on the characters’ lives adds a layer of cultural relevance to the narrative

Coming off the resounding debacle of Ganapath, Bahl tries his hand at a genre he has never had a shot at before – supernatural horror blended with psychological twists. Vikas Bahl’s direction in Shaitaan is crafted to deliver an intense level of horror, intended to make viewers wriggle uncomfortably in their seats. However, the scenes meant to invoke fear are often disappointingly mundane, their impact lessened significantly by overused and almost laughable techniques. The film presents its odd events in a blatantly exaggerated style, eliminating any possibility for subtlety to infiltrate its gaping flaws.

The premise is undeniably intriguing and keeps you hooked throughout. Screenwriter Aamil Keeyan Khan, who had impressed critics and the masses with his tight writing in ‘Drishyam 2’, underestimated their audiences’ intelligence in this film and had too many predictable points. Second half especially is a bit monotonous and predictable, and some plot elements are deemed unconvincing, which detracts from the climax’s impact. However, the written material gives ample scope to the principal cast to spread their wings.

The film is fast-paced and not a single scene is boring. One thing that could have been added was music. The cinematography captures the eerie atmosphere, complementing the story’s dark themes. An outstanding background score by Amit Trivedi heightens the suspenseful moments.

Shaitaan: Verdict

Despite its shortcomings, ‘Shaitaan‘ is a must watch for its stellar performances and atmospheric narrative that make a predictable film engaging and worth watching. There are a lot of logical twists and turns that add to the excitement, along with tension and suspense built throughout with its visuals and background score that heighten the overall experience of watching a horror thriller in a theater.
