Bollywood and horror has an amazing connection since its early days. From the black and white stereotypes story to the VFX horror faces, Bollywood has witnessed almost all types of horror-treated films.

With Halloween around the corner, watch out for these 10 best horror thrilling films and enjoy your Halloween. 

1 Mahal 

Bollywood’s first horror film Mahal was released in 1949. The black and white horror genre film held a very strong plotline with minimal special effects. Helmed by Kamal Amrohi Mahal was one of the most mysterious films of its time, with the best star cast including the beautiful lady Madhubala and Ashok Kumar. Apart from the spooked-up story, this film has given two gems to the Indian Cinema Industry. The director launched India’s most respected and glorified singer Lata Mangeshkar and stunning actress Madhubala with this horror movie.  

2 Raat 

Ram Gopal Varma’s supernatural horror film Raat was one of the best horror films from RGV’s projects. From creepy cats to haunted houses Raat has all the Indian flavors that a Bollywood horror film should have. The film is a true spine-chilling movie with the cast of Revathi, Om Puri, and Rohini Hattangadi. Raat was released in two languages Hindi, and Telugu. The film was produced by Ram Gopal Varma and Boney Kapoor and it was released on 7 February 1992. 

3 Kaun?

Urmila Matondkar’s Kaun? was a psychological suspense thriller film helmed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film was brutally slammed by the critics for its poor writing and lack of characterization, but then the audience totally adored the film. The horrifying thriller was written by Anurag Kashyap, the storyline of the film was refreshing and pleasant than any other Bollywood horror genre. Holding the cast of Urmila Matondkar, Manoj Bajpayee, and Sushant Singh, Raat was produced by Mukesh Udeshi and Allu Aravind. After Satya, Ram Gopal Varma again reunited with Anurag Kashyap and Manoj Bajpayee for the film Kaun?

4 13 B

R Madhavan’s 13 B was a simplified horror film in the stylized cinema pattern. Directed by Vikram Kumar, 13 B was one of the best terrifying movies with no creepy faces and no extra VFX. Apart from the story, R Madhavan as Manohar is just amazing, his acting skill will not only convince you but it will keep you glued till the end of the movie. Along with R Madhavan, Neetu Chandra and Sachin Khedekar are also in the film playing pivotal roles. Not only the film, but the music of the film by Shankar Ehsaan Loy was also very dotting. The film was released in two languages Hindi and Tamil and it was produced under Wide Angle Creations banner. 

5 Bees Saal Baad 

Helmed by Rajkumar Kohli, Bees Saal Baad was one of the highest grosser of its time. The film was based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous book The Hound of the Baskervilles. Starring Mithun Chakraborty, Dimple Kapadia, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Shakti Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Om Prakash, Amjad Khan, and Vinod Mehra in prominent roles. Bees Saal Baad’s scene of A mysterious woman walking around at midnight became one of the obvious scenes of Horror in Bollywood. 

6 404 Error Not Found 

Prawaal Raman’s directorial 404 Error Not Found is one of the most underrated masterpieces in the horror genre. The film majorly expresses a concept of a bipolar disorder of the brain. Director Prawaal Raman has done a great job by giving it a thrilled yet not so scary treatment. The cast of the film is just brilliant including Nishikant Kamat, Imaad Shah, Tisca Chopra, Satish Kaushik, Rajveer Arora, and many more.

7 Mangalsutra 

We all have seen Rekha in her beautifying Romantic avatar, but we just can’t forget her thrilling horror film Mangalsutra. Rekha’s struggle to get her husband out of the evil spirit in the film is simply graceful. Mangalsutra is a remake of a Kannada film Na Ninna Bidalare. Along with Rekha, Anant Nag, Prema Narayan, Om Shivpuri, and many others. The film was helmed by Vijay B and it was produced by C. Jayaram. 

8 Bhoot 

Another collaboration of Ram Gopal Varma and Urmila Matondkar, Bhoot is one of the finest films in the history of the horror genre in Bollywood. The plot twirls around a couple who shifts into a haunted flat and the evil spirit drive the wife (Urmila) crazy. Bhoot has many scary scenes that will give you goosebumps throughout the film. Urmila Matondkar’s horrified character will threaten you for sure. The actress won many awards for her magnifying performance in the film. The film casts Urmila Matondkar, Ajay Devgn, Rekha, Fardeen Khan, Tanuja, Nana Patekar and more. 

9 Darna Mana Hai

An anthology horror drama film with a narration of 6 different stories was an experimental film released in 2003. The film was incredibly scary and has a lot of mysterious scenes. The film casts a huge number of actors including Saif Ali Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Vivek Oberoi, Nana Patekar Isha Koppikar, and many more. 

10 Tumbbad

Last but not least, Tumbbad is a mythological scary horror thriller drama which is inherently the best movie Bollywood would ever have. The film was made with epic cinematic beauty, with the best music score ahead of its time. Sohum Shah as Vinayak Rao was a stunning and sparkling diamond in the film. Helmed by Anand Gandhi and Rahil Barve, Tumbbad delivers an outstanding piece of art.
