Jessica Chastain’s latest horror play has found the kind of audience momentum studios love, even if critics and opening-night viewers were far less enthusiastic. Other Mommy, the Universal, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster release directed by Rob Savage, has already turned a modestly budgeted theatrical run into a clear commercial win less than two weeks after opening on October 9, 2026.
Other Mommy Turns A Fast Profit
The numbers tell the story. Other Mommy has grossed about $78.8 million worldwide so far, while carrying a reported production budget of $19 million. Domestically, it has reached roughly $44.85 million, a strong return for a horror title that leaned on a buzzy concept and a sharp opening weekend to do most of its heavy lifting.
The film debuted at No. 1 in North America with $27.5 million, then suffered a steep second-weekend drop to around $8.3 million. That slide was severe, but it has not derailed the broader picture. For a Blumhouse-style genre release built on cost control and strong initial turnout, Other Mommy has already done enough to stand as a profitable performer.
Critical reception has been much colder. The film currently sits at 20 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while opening-night audiences gave it a D+ CinemaScore. Those reactions signaled a front-loaded run, and that is exactly how the box office pattern has played out. Even so, the early surge was big enough to keep the film firmly in the black.
The Film’s Hook Helped Sell The Scare
Based on Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, Other Mommy follows a young girl haunted by a sinister entity that looks and sounds exactly like her mother. Chastain plays both Ursula and the demonic Other Mommy, with Arabella Olivia Clark, Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Sean Kaufman and Karen Allen rounding out the cast.
Savage directed the film from a screenplay by Nathan Elston, with James Wan producing. Universal released it theatrically in the United States after shifting it from an earlier May 2026 date to October 9, 2026. The premise, paired with Chastain’s double role and a strong horror-marketing push, helped the film break through even as word of mouth weakened quickly.
Jessica Chastain’s Recent And Upcoming Work
For Chastain, Other Mommy arrives after a run that has mixed prestige drama with commercial experimentation. Her most recent released film before Other Mommy was Mothers’ Instinct in 2024, the psychological thriller co-starring Anne Hathaway and directed by Benoît Delhomme. Before that came Memory in 2023, Michel Franco’s acclaimed drama opposite Peter Sarsgaard.
Her current slate also points to more genre and dramatic territory ahead. IMDb listings currently show Heartland among her upcoming projects, keeping her pipeline active beyond this fall’s horror release. With Other Mommy, though, Chastain has added an unusual entry to her recent career phase: a critically bruised horror film that still connected where it matters most for the studio, at the global box office.
