Manoj Bajpayee’s latest big-screen outing has stumbled badly in its very first week. Governor, the Hindi financial thriller led by the acclaimed actor, has wrapped up seven days in cinemas with just Rs 4.50 crore nett in India, sealing a disappointing start and pushing the film firmly into flop territory.
The film opened to Rs 70 lakh and never managed to build meaningful momentum through the week. Its theatrical performance has been especially underwhelming given Bajpayee’s stature and the film’s politically charged, crisis-era premise. With new titles arriving in cinemas, Governor now looks set to finish its run below the Rs 10 crore nett mark.
Governor’s Opening Week Box Office Run
Directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar, Governor released in theatres on June 12, 2026. The film is produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under the Sunshine Pictures banner and stars Manoj Bajpayee and Adah Sharma. It is a Hindi financial thriller inspired by the events surrounding India’s 1990 economic crisis and focuses on the institutional conflict between the Reserve Bank of India and the Government of India.
Its box office journey, however, has been far less dramatic than its subject matter. After starting with Rs 70 lakh on day one, the film closed its opening week at Rs 4.50 crore nett in India. The muted trajectory reflected the audience response through the week, with the film unable to convert its premise into sustained ticket sales.
Governor Box Office Collection:
Day 1: 0.90 cr
Day 2: 1.15 cr
Day 3: 1.40 cr
Day 4: 0.25 cr
Day 5: 0.35 cr
Day 6: 0.25 cr
Day 7: 0.20 cr
Total: 4.50 crore nett
The reception appears to have played a major role. The film drew a mixed response, and that limited its ability to gain traction through word of mouth. For a content-driven drama that needed strong audience endorsement, the lack of consistent theatrical pull proved costly.
A Tough Theatrical Phase For Manoj Bajpayee
The result also continues a difficult theatrical trend for Bajpayee as a solo lead. While he remains one of the most respected actors in Hindi entertainment, his box office record as the primary face of a film has stayed uneven in recent years. Governor now joins that list, despite arriving with a topical setup and a serious dramatic canvas.
At the same time, Bajpayee’s standing on streaming remains remarkably strong, with the actor continuing to enjoy a loyal OTT audience that has embraced his more character-driven work.
Manoj Bajpayee’s Recent And Upcoming Work
In the past few years, Bajpayee has stayed active across both theatres and streaming. His 2024 releases included Bhaiyya Ji, a theatrical action drama, Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout, and Despatch, which premiered on ZEE5. In 2023, he was also seen in Joram, Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai, and Gulmohar, all of which strengthened his reputation for performance-led storytelling more than box office muscle.
Looking ahead, Bajpayee is attached to Inspector Zende, listed as a Netflix film, and Ghooskhor Pandat, another Netflix title. With Governor now underperforming in cinemas, his upcoming slate again underlines how naturally his current career phase aligns with streaming-led storytelling.
