Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi’s much-anticipated film Thandel has finally hit cinemas, and it’s off to a strong start. The survival romance drama has generated significant buzz, thanks to its gripping narrative and the fan-favourite pairing of Chaitanya and Pallavi. While the film has opened well, its long-term success remains uncertain due to mixed word-of-mouth.
Will Thandel Manage To Sustain After Strong Start At The Box Office?
Backed by Geetha Arts, Thandel saw DECENT occupancy in the morning shows, and the numbers are expected to rise in the evening and night screenings.
The advance bookings and initial trends indicate a strong opening at the box office. However, the real test begins after the first weekend when audience reactions will dictate its fate.
The film has received mixed-to-positive responses from both critics and audiences. While the engaging love story set against the India-Pakistan backdrop and the soulful music have been praised, some have pointed out pacing issues.
If the film manages to sustain good footfalls beyond the opening weekend, it could emerge as a box office winner.
Film Has Tough Competition Outside Telugu Circuits
While Thandel enjoys a loyal Telugu audience, it faces stiff competition outside its home market. Other releases like Vidaamuyarchi, Badass Ravi Kumar, and Loveyapa are also in theatres to make it an uphill battle. The film has been released in Tamil and Hindi as well, but its performance in non-Telugu regions is yet to be determined.
That being said, Thandel has managed to outshine Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor’s Loveyapa in terms of morning occupancy. The Telugu period drama registered an impressive 47% opening occupancy, far better than Chaitanya’s last film Custody, which saw only 24.31% on its opening day. This marks a 93% jump in his box office pull, showing the film’s strong initial traction.
Box Office Target Of Thandel For A Clean Hit
For Thandel to be declared a clean hit, it needs to collect at least Rs 70 crore globally. The film’s worldwide distribution rights have been valued at Rs 40 crore, setting a high bar for success.
Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, Thandel follows the story of a fisherman from Srikakulam who gets captured by Pakistani forces in international waters. The film blends romance, action, and patriotism, offering a gripping narrative with high emotional stakes. Alongside Chaitanya and Pallavi, the film also features Prakash Belawadi, Divya Pillai, and Karunakaran in key roles.
