Nushrratt Bharuccha Opens Up On Being Sidelined Despite Hits: “Main 20 Saal Mein 10 Pictures Le Aayi, Phir Bhi…”

In an unfiltered conversation, Nushrratt Bharuccha opened up about the persistent underbelly of Bollywood, revealing how, time and time again, she seems to hit the right mark in her career but struggles with landing strategic roles that many of her contemporaries seem to be handed on a silver platter.

Nushrratt has quite an impressive track record—from Pyaar Ka Punchnama to branching off with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety—but the kind of mainstream recognition and big banner signings that usually follow such hits have almost completely evaded her.

“It’s A Reality We Don’t Talk About…”

The Chhorii 2 actress discussed her experiences with Pinkvilla and did not hold back. “Main 20 saal mein 10 pictures le aayi, phir bhi main unhi jagahon pe khadi hoon, jahan main pehle thi,” she said, pointing out the lack of mobility due to the industry’s selective talent policy.

Though she omitted naming anyone directly, Nushrratt referred to Shraddha Kapoor as an example—someone with goodwill who continues receiving major opportunities regardless of the hit-or-miss nature of her box office outings. “Mujhe aise bade films nahi milte. Shraddha ke paas hamesha projects hote hain aur bade ones,” she further cited, emphasising that branding and relationships tend to matter more than pure skill and effort.

Nushrratt has struggled to balance indie acclaim with mainstream recognition throughout her career. Although she was praised for her role in Chhorii, and movies like Dream Girl and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety did well at the box office, these accolades have done little to earn her the stable leading roles that many of her peers enjoy.

“Nushrratt, like many other actors, finds herself in the middle of a constantly persisting bias which only serves to stratify and keep certain competitors at an ATD level, irrespective of past accomplishments. It goes without saying that countless factors influence casting choices. Talent is often not the main criterion,” she stated—bluntly infamous, but indeed astonishing to hear.

Undoubtedly, Nushrratt’s comments have reignited debates regarding “camp culture” and the acting circles of Bollywood, in a paradigm where who you know matters significantly more than your work ethic or dependability. Coming from a sector stricken with dubious pseudo-professional standards, many believe she deserves admiration for openly speaking out about these biases.

The core underlying issue goes far beyond casting culture. It reveals a vicious model that seeks to control and stifle others.
