Resident Evil Posts Franchise-Best India Opening Weekend, Heads For Rs 10.5 To 11 Crore Nett

Resident Evil has come out firing in India. Despite multiple new releases arriving at the same time, the Zach Cregger-directed reboot has opened with uncommon force for a Hollywood horror title and is heading for a Rs 10.5 crore to Rs 11 crore net opening weekend across all versions.

The film began with paid previews of Rs 39 lakh on Thursday, collected Rs 2.13 crore on Friday, and then surged to Rs 3.42 crore nett on Saturday. That took its total to Rs 5.94 crore nett (7.12 crore gross) in just two days of regular play, setting up the strongest India opening weekend ever for the Resident Evil franchise.

Biggest Resident Evil Opening In India

The trajectory is what gives this launch its edge. After a measured start through previews, the film found stronger traction on Friday and then posted a major jump on Saturday, showing that audience pull widened rather than flattening after day one. For a dark, genre-led Hollywood release, that kind of weekend acceleration is often the clearest sign that the theatrical response is broadening beyond the core fan base.

That early momentum has also helped the reboot stand out in a crowded release corridor. Instead of getting squeezed by competition, Resident Evil used its first full weekend to build pace, turning what could have been a niche opening into a far more notable commercial start.

Weekend Momentum Gives The Film A Boost

Saturday’s Rs 4 crore nett remains the key number in the film’s opening run so far. It was a steep rise from Friday and gave the film the kind of day-two push that can shape its immediate box office direction. For theatrical horror titles, especially imported franchise fare, that sort of jump usually matters more than previews because it shows whether the film is converting curiosity into wider footfalls.

The Sunday business now becomes important less as a headline number and more as a launchpad. If the film holds its ground into Monday, it will have a real shot at extending its run beyond an opening-weekend burst and establishing itself as a sturdy performer in the market.

Film Details And What Helped The Start

Backed by Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film, Resident Evil is directed by Zach Cregger and stars Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Johnno Wilson. The 2026 release reboots the long-running Capcom property as a fresh live-action theatrical title, which appears to have worked in its favour commercially.

The reboot angle gave the film a cleaner entry point for younger moviegoers, while the franchise name retained enough recall among older fans. That combination has helped Resident Evil begin its India run with far more authority than many Hollywood horror releases manage in a competitive corridor.
