Mufasa: The Lion King, the highly anticipated prequel to Disney’s 2019 hit The Lion King, has made an impressive debut at the Indian box office, earning Rs 35 crore in its opening weekend.
Directed by Barry Jenkins, the film brings the story of Mufasa to life, with Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr voicing the main characters internationally, while Shah Rukh Khan and Mahesh Babu lend their voices to the Hindi and Telugu versions respectively.
Mufasa: The Lion King Holds Strong In 1st Weekend
The film opened with a strong start, collecting Rs 7.5 crore on its first day. It quickly gained momentum, raking in Rs 12 crore on Saturday and Rs 15.25 crore on Sunday.
This brings the film’s total weekend collection to Rs 34.75 crore at the Indian box office. The film is expected to benefit even further from the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.
Mufasa: The Lion King 1st Weekend Box Office (India)
| Day | Net Collections in India |
|---|---|
| Friday | Rs 7.5 cr |
| Saturday | Rs 12 cr |
| Sunday | Rs 15.25 cr |
| Total | Rs 34.75 cr |
Despite being a prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King has done remarkably well, though it still falls short of the box office numbers that The Lion King (2019) achieved. The original film opened to Rs 11.10 crore in India.
Mufasa‘s performance is about 20% lower, which is still impressive considering it’s a prequel and doesn’t have the same nostalgia pull. In North America, Mufasa’s opening weekend earnings are similarly 20% lower than the 2019 film.
Film To Compete With Varun Dhawan Starrer Baby John & More
With a promising start, Mufasa: The Lion King is now looking ahead to a crucial period of competition. The festive period will see new releases, including Varun Dhawan‘s much-anticipated action movie Baby John, which hits theatres on December 25, 2024. Along with Baby John, films like Barroz and Robinhood are also set to debut, adding pressure to Mufasa‘s box office run.
However, the prequel is still on track for a solid run in India. Industry insiders are predicting that Mufasa: The Lion King could end up with a theatrical finish of Rs 80-100 crore, which would be a remarkable achievement for Jenkins and his team.
