Superboys Of Malegaon Box Office: Reema Kagti’s Film Struggles To Attract Audience On Day 1, Becomes 2025’s Lowest Opener Yet

Superboys of Malegaon struggled to attract audiences on its opening day and earned just Rs 0.45 cr at the box office.

Reema Kagti’s Superboys of Malegaon entered cinemas with high expectations, but the numbers tell a different story. Despite strong reviews and an original concept, the film failed to pull audiences to theatres, making it the lowest opener of 2025 so far.

Superboys Of Malegaon Gets Weak Start Despite Good Reviews

Superboys of Malegaon had a slow start at the box office, earning only Rs 0.45 crore on its first day.

One reason could be its unusual release strategy, as it is the first Amazon Original to hit theatres before streaming. Many viewers might not be familiar with this approach, affecting its opening. It now depends on the weekend to see if the film gains traction.

Amazon MGM Studios took a different approach by releasing the film in theatres before making it available on Prime Video. This was meant to generate hype, but it’s unclear how long the movie will stay in cinemas before heading to streaming.

Typically, Amazon follows a 60-90-day gap between theatrical and digital releases. However, since Superboys of Malegaon is an in-house project, it might not stick to this timeline. A digital release could help the film find an audience, especially among viewers who prefer indie-style storytelling over mainstream cinema.

About The Film

Directed by Reema Kagti and written by Varun Grover, Superboys of Malegaon is based on real events. It tells the story of Nasir Sheikh and his friends, who built a local film industry in Malegaon in the late 1990s.

Set in Malegaon, the film follows Nasir Sheikh (Adarsh Gourav), a young man dismissed by his village as directionless. But after discovering a VCR’s editing function, he finds a passion for filmmaking. Along with his friends, he starts making movies despite having no industry connections.

Their journey takes a tough turn when one of them, Shafique (Shashank Arora), faces an unexpected setback. The group reunites for one last film that could prove their talent and silence their critics.

The film stars Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora in lead roles.

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Kagti under Excel Entertainment, Tiger Baby, and Amazon MGM Studios, the film had a solid production team behind it.

Critics have praised its storytelling and performances, but the lack of a strong opening day is raising questions. Even with a well-planned promotion, it struggled to draw audiences.

Superboys of Malegaon tells a compelling story of ambition, struggle, and creativity. But with a weak box office start, its future remains uncertain. It now depends on word-of-mouth and whether it can find its audience in the coming weeks.
