The Super Mario Bros. Movie Becomes Highest Grossing Domestic Movie of 2023 in Just 6 Days, Heading For All Time Record

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is stomping yet another box office world record. The film, an adaptation of the iconic Mario video game franchise which comes from Despicable Me creators Illumination Entertainment, stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. The film’s opening weekend raked in the highest global opening ever for an animated film, beating out 2019’s Frozen II.

The film will become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time at the global box office. Although the final numbers are not yet in, it will have surpassed the previous record-holder, 2016’s Warcraft, and its global gross of $439 million.

In addition to attracting families, Mario defied expectations by appealing to general audiences who grew up playing the games; 45 percent of ticket buyers were between the ages of 18 and 34, compared with 27 percent for fellow Illumination title Minions: The Rise of Gru, which grossed $123.1 million in its four-day domestic bow over the 2022 July Fourth holiday, including $107 million for the three-day weekend, on its way to $939 million globally last year.

As well as continuing its charge into this week, The Super Mario Bros. Movie pulled in another £20.1 million on Monday, another record-breaker for Illumination, whose previous Monday high was £19.6 million set by Sing back in 2016. The Monday haul also gave the movie the second highest Monday ever for Universal, coming in just short of 2015’s Jurassic World, and an impressive third best Monday in April ever behind the massive Marvel movies Avengers: Endgame and Avengers Infinity War.

Having been on release for less than a week, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has another several weeks to run at the box office, and that means it is currently looking at a total box office that could make it hard to beat as the highest grossing movie of the year. All of that will be revealed in time, but there is certainly no signs of the film relinquishing its box office crown for some time to come.
