Bollywood’s acclaimed director, Zoya Akhtar is known for her directorial films like Luck By Chance, Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara, Dil Dhadakne Do and Gully Boy. We have now learnt that the director has been working on a documentary around her father Javed Akhtar and his writing partner Salim Khan.
Salim-Javed, the writing duo are regarded as Hindi cinema’s greatest screenwriters. They were the first Indian screenwriters to achieve the star status, after delivering iconic films and mega blockbusters like Deewar, Zanjeer, Sholay, Don, Trishul, Mr. India and many more. They’re credited to create Angry young man image of Mr. Bachchan on screens.
A source revealed to Pinkvilla, “Zoya feels that the Salim-Javed combo gave a new lease to writers in Hindi film industry and their achievements deserve to make it to the spectacle. While at first, she was planning to spin a biopic for theatres on their life, through the lockdown she felt that the story demands to be showcased on a digital medium,”
It is said to be a docu-drama, highlighting the highs, and lows of the duo from the golden era of Indian cinema. The documentary will have an appearance from both Salim and Javed. “She has been talking to both Salim Khan and Javed Akthar independently to ensure an objective approach to the story. Multiple meetings have taken place and Zoya is on the verge of closing the material that she wants to bring in her story,” the source added.
We hear that the documentary will be produced under Zoya’s banner Tiger Baby and the project has already been pitched to Amazon Prime Video, who have instantly loved it but the deal hasn’t been closed yet.
“In-fact, if the docu-drama gets an overwhelming response with audience asking for more, don’t be surprised if the story is dramatised for a theatrical medium with actors stepping into the shoes of this iconic writer duo. It’s all being kept under wraps at the moment,” the source concluded.
