On November 27, Kal Ho Naa Ho marked its 21st anniversary, a milestone that brings back fond memories of the 2003 Bollywood hit. The romantic drama is being loved by the audiences, even in its re-release.
Shah Rukh Khan’s portrayal of Aman remains one of his career’s most memorable performances. His ability to balance humour and heartbreak made his character unforgettable, especially in the emotional climax, which leaves viewers teary-eyed.
One of the memorable moments of the film is when Aman, despite his terminal illness, runs to meet Naina (Preity Zinta). The scene is so powerful that, even though it defies logic, it only amplifies the emotional intensity of the film.
Nikkhil Advani On Shah Rukh Khan’s Iconic Running Scene
During his recent conversation with Bollywood Hungama, director Nikkhil Advani reflected on Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic running scenes and their impact on the films they’ve worked on together.
He mentioned several films, such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), where Shah Rukh’s running sequences became central to the emotional weight of the scenes.
Advani shared, “Whether it’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, where he’s running on the bridge, or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, where he’s running in his introduction scene, Shah Rukh makes people’s hearts beat faster or makes their hearts skip a beat when he runs! He’s like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. If I had to think of any other actor who runs as iconically as Shah Rukh, it is Tom Cruise. This is my personal opinion. I am sure that there are other actors who run very well or are dynamic when they take off.”
He went on to explain that Shah Rukh’s running scenes were always perfectly timed with the emotional moments of the films. In Kal Ho Naa Ho, for example, the sprint to meet Naina after she discovers his condition is one of the film’s most touching moments.
Advani said, “Shah Rukh’s run has been timed with wonderful emotions. In Kal Ho Naa Ho, he’s trying to speak with Preity who has just found out that he’s dying. In Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, he’s trying to reach the pooja in his house on time. So, I think Karan Johar and all of us had a knack for timing his runs with great emotions.”
On Collaborating With Shah Rukh Khan Again
When asked if he would work with Shah Rukh Khan again, Advani shared that many people have asked about future collaborations. However, he feels that the films they’ve made together – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Kal Ho Naa Ho – were so special that any new project would need to match their magic.
“The experience of those films was so fantastic that one would really have to come up with a flawless script. I would never want to put a daag on the 100% track record that I have,” he said.
