Aamir On The Khan-Era Rivalry: ‘Unke Success Se Mujhe Khushi Hoti Thi’
During a refreshingly candid conversation on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Aamir Khan reminisced about that golden age of Bollywood — the 1990s — and tackled that omnipresent question: Was there competition between the Khans?
Aamir Khan noted that while he, Shah Rukh Khan, and Salman Khan were pals, nevertheless, they were competing at that time. He illustrated that this was not a competition based on negativity.
“Har koi ye chahta hai ki sabse zyada wo successful ho, sabse zyada log uske kaam ko pasand kare, aur ye acchi baatein hoti hai. Lekin competition mere side se hamesha healthy hi rha h,”
— Aamir Khan
‘DDLJ Jaisi Film Main Nahi Bana Sakta… Aur Koi Zarurat Bhi Nahi’
One of the most emotional moments on the podcast came when Aamir lauded Shah Rukh Khan’s legendary performance in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The PK star stated that it may have become a prominent romantic film, but he never felt the need to copy or compete with it.
“SRK ne kamaal ka kaam kiya hai. DDLJ mujhe dekhne mein maza aata hai.. main compete nahi karta usse,”
— Aamir Khan
He reiterates that his competition has always been internal, competing with himself, not others.
Aamir Khan On The Evolving Industry & Staying Inspired
Aamir also contemplated how when he sees other successful cinema — be it SRK, Salman or other peers — it often motivates his own creative process. He said he feels energised, not envious, by the success of another actor.
“Main unke success se inspire hota hoon. Mera competition mere apne kaam ke sath hai,”
This statement demonstrates the opposite of the often dramatised story of the ‘Khan wars’ and shows that mutual respect exists — and perhaps goes even deeper — between the three legends.
Aamir Khan’s Comeback: Sitaare Zameen Par
Aamir Khan is ready for a significant release, titled Sitaare Zameen Par, his first venture into theatres since the poorly received Laal Singh Chaddha. With direction from RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par looks to be a feel-good story that shares the emotional resonance of Taare Zameen Par but is clearly more celebratory and family-orientated.
- Release Date: June 20, 2025
- Cast: Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh, Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Simran Maneghskar

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Aamir Khan‘s honest reflection of being in direct competition with Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in the ’90s is an interesting perspective of a golden period in Hindi cinema. By valuing a film as magnificent as DDLJ instead of trying to outshine it, Aamir reinforces that he is a thoughtful performer and artist.
With Sitaare Zameen Par releasing soon, it gets his fans ready to see the perfectionist again.
This is not competition, it is a legacy.
