Laapataa Ladies (also known as Lost Ladies) missed out on the Oscars 2025 shortlist. The Academy revealed the list for Best International Feature Film on December 17, and Kiran Rao‘s film wasn’t included. This left the film’s team and fans feeling disappointed.

Laapataa Ladies Makers Issue Official Statement After The Film Excluded From Oscars 2025 Race

Aamir Khan Productions responded with an official statement. “We are of course disappointed, but equally we are immensely grateful for the incredible support and belief we’ve received throughout this journey,” the statement said.

The team also thanked the Academy for considering Laapataa Ladies for the Oscars. “To be included in this prestigious process alongside some of the finest films from across the world is an honour in itself,” the statement continued. Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Studios, and Kindling Productions also thanked the Academy members and the Film Federation of India (FFI) jury for selecting the film to represent India.

Despite the disappointment, the team remained optimistic. “This is not the end but a step forward. We remain committed to bringing more powerful stories to life and sharing them with the world,” the statement concluded. They also congratulated the 15 films that made it to the shortlist, wishing them success in the next stage.

Laapataa Ladies is a Hindi-language film starring Sparsh Shrivastav, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Ravi Kishan, and Chhaya Kadam. It was released in theatres on March 1, 2024, and received positive reviews for its strong performances and compelling storytelling. The film is currently available on Netflix, where more viewers around the world can enjoy it.

THIS Hindi-language Film Has Been Shortlisted For Oscars 2025

Though Laapataa Ladies didn’t make the cut, the Academy’s shortlist included several other notable films. Santosh, a Hindi-language film from the UK, made it to the list.

Directed by Sandhya Suri, Santosh is a crime drama that premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It stars Shahana Goswami, Sunita Rajwar, Sanjay Bishnoi, and Kushal Dubey.

Other films on the shortlist include I’m Still Here, Universal Language, Waves, The Girl with the Needle, Emilia Perez, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Touch, Kneecap, Vermiglio, Armand, From Ground Zero Dahomey, and How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies.
