Aamir Khan x Lokesh Kanagaraj: An Explosive Project
Bollywood’s Mr Perfectionist Aamir Khan has signified one of the largest upcoming projects for the cross-industry collaboration — a high-budget superhero action film with the top director in Tamil cinema, Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film, whose title has yet to be revealed, is slated to begin production in the second half of 2026, after Aamir has finished filming Rajkumar Hirani’s biopic of Dadasaheb Phalke.
Aamir Khan also made waves with his statement in a media interaction:
“Lokesh and I are making a film. This belongs to the superhero genre. It is a big-scale action film and is going on floors in the second half of 2026.”
Aamir, who is famous for cinematic landmarks such as Ghajini, 3 Idiots, PK, and Dangal, teaming up with director Lokesh Kanagaraj—known for Kaithi, Master, and Leo—shows a huge new leap into badged genre filmmaking. Lokesh, who has built a fan-favourite cinematic universe in Tamil cinema, is stepping into Hindi cinema with a clear vision of building his own brand of mass storytelling.
The still-untitled superhero/action hybrid film that is in the early stages appears to be conceived as a pan-India spectacle at a scale unlike any of Aamir’s previous projects.
No PK 2, But Dadasaheb Phalke Biopic Is Next
With speculation removed from the equation with respect to PK 2, Aamir made it clear:
“PK 2 is a rumour. I do not know anything about it.”
Rather, he is going to be filming Dadasaheb Phalke with director Rajkumar Hirani later this year. The last two collaborations were big box office hits — 3 Idiots and PK — which have left an indelible mark on our culture.
“Dadasaheb Phalke film is definitely being made. Raju and I are working on it,” Aamir confirmed.
Mahabharat Still A Dream, Not A Reality—Yet
Aamir also revisited his long-standing plan to make Mahabharat, describing it as a “yagna” as opposed to a movie.
“Mahabharat has been my dream for 25 years. But it’s not a movie—it’s a journey. Until I don’t walk on that path, and I have a base in front of me, I can’t answer this question. For now, it’s just a dream.”
He also added that a project of that magnitude, with such emotion, requires spirituality and timing to be right.
What This Means For Bollywood’s Future Slate
Aamir confirming several films that include a biopic with one of India’s biggest directors and then moving to a superhero project is rare for an actor who usually locks one film at a time. This load of multiple announcements is also a ‘loud’ indication of Bollywood’s changing landscape of pan-India reach, North-South crossovers, and genre disruption becoming their new path to success.
Both Sitaare Zameen Par, due June 20, 2025, and his future helms will answer the question of Aamir’s changing position in a post-pandemic film space.
