Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani, who have delivered ubiquitous all-time blockbusters like 3 Idiots and PK, are set to collaborate once again. This time, they will be working on a film about the origin of Indian cinema. Khan and Hirani are coming together for a grand biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, who is widely considered the “Father of Indian Cinema”. The film is targeting a theatrical release on April 30, 2027, for the 157th birth anniversary of the legend.
The Most Ambitious Biopic In Indian Cinema
According to sources close to the film, the project has been in connection for years, and Aamir Khan and Hirani were discreetly and steadily refining, honing, and evaluating everything about the project.
The film was only recently announced; however, they are slated to begin pre-production this October and principal photography by December 2025.
They are hoping to wrap by mid-2026 so that the lengthy post-production and visual effects process will be ready before the release. A VFX and AI company based in Los Angeles has been hired to recreate the early 1900s of India with incredible details.
“The intent is to create a film that will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, not only celebrating the life of Phalke, but the creation of Indian cinema itself,” said a production source.
Aamir Khan’s Intense Preparation for Dadasaheb Phalke
While Aamir Khan is known for wasting no time in the prep of his characters, he will soon begin dialect and character preparation by July 2025, when the theatrical release of his sports dramedy Sitare Zameen Par is out.
It is expected that Khan will completely transform himself, even with vocal modulation, the ability to fully likeness the physicality of Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, and period accuracy.
The project has full support of Phalke’s family, including the grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, who has shared stories and reference material from original (and archival) material and family material with the filmmakers, leading to less guesswork in successfully creating a biopic about the man.
The People Behind The Scenes
The biopic is being written by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, with the help of Hindukush Bharadwaj and Avishkar Bharadwaj, two writers who have been attached to the project since the research phase.
Prior to this biopic project with the Dadasaheb Phalke film, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani had begun discussing a possible biopic project on Lala Amarnath, the acclaimed Indian cricketing legend. They shelved that project at the time due to the unfortunate response Dunki had received.
It is reported that both felt this project was long overdue and should be fast-tracked for the audience, given the timing now looks right.

BoxOfficeWorldwide Verdict
The Aamir Khan–Rajkumar Hirani duo is cinematic gold, and it feels as artistic as it is cinematic that they will be telling the story of Dadasaheb Phalke.
Phalke is intimately tied to the founding of Indian film — and if nothing else, this film will be a box office saturation and a cultural reference point to the very beginning of the Indian motion picture industry.
Due out on April 30, 2027, this film may be remembered as the most ambitious biopic in the history of Indian cinema — a tribute to the man who dreamt with a hand-crank camera and changed entertainment in India forever.
